Today, the Federal reserve cut it's federal funds rate, the interest banks charge on overnight loans, by 1/2% to 1 percent. The last time funds rate was lower than this was in 1958. The Fed’s quarter-point cut in the federal funds rate to 4.25 percent was announced shortly after 2:15 p.m. ET and was the third straight rate cut from the Fed. The cut disappointed investors who had hoped for a more aggressive rate reduction of a half-percentage point. The central bank cut its federal funds rate from 4.75% to 4.5%. The rate is what banks charge each other for overnight loans and affects everything from auto loans to credit card rates.
