schweitzer mountain resort: White Pine Lodge, Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Sandpoint, Idaho - 09/29/11 06:27 AM
People often ask me, "How do you like working on the mountain?  What's it like in the summer (I know it's magical in the winter)?"
My reply?
"This is THE greatest place to work...and even better to play!"  It's true... Schweitzer had an EPIC snow year in 2011 with some of the best powder skiing The Rockies have ever seen. Our summer was almost as exhilerating!  Music Festivals, hiking, biking, berry picking, an assortment of summer racing events...the high alpine, magical culture...what's not to love.  The 2011-2012 Winter season is fast approaching and "El Nina" is promising another great powder year!  (Even more exciting, I'm … (0 comments)

schweitzer mountain resort: Sandpoint, Idaho voted MOST BEAUTIFUL SMALL TOWN IN AMERICA! - 07/21/11 09:56 AM
Well, this is worth a blog!  USA Today/Rand McNally spent several weeks on the road with the goal of discovering the most spectacular towns in America.  (Click here to see the article).  The results are not all that surprising.  Sandpoint took the honor of MOST BEAUTIFUL!
(Below is a photo of the "Starbuck's dock" located in the center of town.  There is just something kind of special about arriving at Starbucks by boat in the morning.)

The great thing about Sandpoint is that it keeps getting better!  The DSBA (Downtown Sandpoint Business Association), along with the Chamber, Sandpoint Rotary … (4 comments)

schweitzer mountain resort: Sandpoint, Idaho..."America's Coolest Small Town"? - 03/28/10 04:04 PM

Sandpoint, Idaho..."America's Coolest Small Town"?

Once again, Sandpoint is getting noticed.  Budget Travel Magazine has a poll for “America’s Coolest Small Town” and Sandpoint is in the running.  (http://www.budgettravel.com/bt-srv/coolestsmalltowns/CST2010.html).  If you have been reading my blog with any regularity and agree with my assessment about this area, click on the Sandpoint star on the map, then click “Add to Ballot”, then “Cast Your Ballot”.

I present this information with a certain amount of reservation.  The rule here is to "keep your mouth shut" about the virtues of this town.  We want everyone to enjoy the natural splendor of this area but...we … (5 comments)

schweitzer mountain resort: SPEECHLESS SUNDAY: Schweitzer Morning - 01/17/10 02:18 AM
Looking out over Schweitzer Mountain's "Sunnyside chair #4" I saw this rare sight the other morning.  The colors were amazing.  (The chair hadn't opened yet).  Not bad for an iPhone

Today it is snowing lightly.  It looks like another powder day.
Here's a Schweitzer update:  I just took my obligatory 7 runs this morning and I am exhausted.  ...soft, deep powder on every run, top to bottom.  It is on the warm side so it wasn't champagne powder (a little on the heavy side) but smooth and silky none-the-less.  Basically...UNBELIEVABLE.

schweitzer mountain resort: SPEECHLESS SUNDAY: Schweitzer Switchback #7 - 01/02/10 02:50 PM
I drive by Schweitzer Switchback #7 twice a day every day.  This is the highest and last switchback on the trek up to Schweitzer Mountain Resort and, fittingly, has a viewing turnout.  It is a rare occurrence when I don't stop just to look out over our beloved Sandpoint Valley.  This is truly an inspiring view in virtually any weather condition.  Today I couldn't pass up a photo of the colorful morning sky!  Enjoy!

schweitzer mountain resort: DO NOT move to SANDPOINT! ...unless you are willing to PLAY as hard as you work! - 11/15/09 01:07 PM
DO NOT move to SANDPOINT!
I have coveted a life in Sandpoint, Idaho ever since I discovered this mountain town in the early 70's.  Life's twists and turns did not allow me to actually move here full-time until 2005.  I had many valid reasons for delaying the inevitable and I stand by them.  One of the big reasons, however, was that I was worried Sandpoint wasn't ready for me.
I'm a tennis player.  I have been playing year around (indoors and outdoors) for the last thirty years.  This included local and regional tournaments, USTA leagues (summer and winter), fanatical tennis buddies … (6 comments)

schweitzer mountain resort: SPEECHLESS SUNDAY: The SANDPOINT calm before the storm. - 11/07/09 02:07 PM
This is what I saw on my way to Starbucks this morning.  That's Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort in the distance with a skiff of snow showing.  I'm constantly awed by the beauty here in Sandpoint, so I never go anywhere without my camera.  As always, the camera really doesn't do it justice.

It wasn't long after this shot that "the storm" came through and dumped 12" of snow at Schweitzer Mountain.

schweitzer mountain resort: SNOW!!! THE SCHWEITZER MOUNTAIN COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN! - 10/02/09 08:02 AM
SNOW!!!  THE SCHWEITZER MOUNTAIN COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!
TRAILS OPEN: 0;  LIFTS OPEN: 0;  NEW SNOW:  YES!

As I was driving up Schweitzer Mountain this morning, heading to my office in the Village, I noticed at about the 3,000 foot elevation the rain that has been invading the Sandpoint Valley below was turning a little slushy.  This phenomenon happens each Fall, of course, and my corresponding reaction is also the same each Fall.  OH MY GOD, THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!  There is going to be snow in the Village!

The first thing to do? …crank up KPND (the local eclectic and … (8 comments)

schweitzer mountain resort: Sandpoint, Idaho..."Come for the Mountain, Stay for the Lake!" - 09/14/09 03:49 AM
Every day I am amazed by North Idaho.  I cannot tire of the beauty around here (Sandpoint, specifically).  As I was reading the blogs of some of my "associates" on ActiveRain, I ran across Steve Loynd's picture blog he submitted yesterday of beautiful New Hampshire (one of my favorite spots in the world).  It happened to be another gorgeous day here, so I went out and took some shots myself.

I read Steve's blog while doing my Sunday floor duty at my office on Schweitzer Mountain Resort.  Literally, I stepped outside my door and snapped this shot looking down … (14 comments)

schweitzer mountain resort: THE BLACK DIAMOND TENNIS INVITATIONAL. SANDPOINT'S BEST TENNIS! - 08/27/09 04:46 PM
2009 marks the year that Sandpoint puts it's name on the "tennis map" with THE BLACK DIAMOND TENNIS INVITATIONAL...aptly dubbed, "The Most Beautiful Tennis Tournament in the Country!"  (Maybe the world).

Invitations were sent out to the top players from the Inland Northwest with the idea that the first 24 to respond would get the "invite".  A few hours later the tournament draw was filled.  This event will be EPIC!
Not only can we look forward to great tennis, but the event dovetails with the Schweitzer Fall Fest & Music Festival...a celebration of another great summer on … (7 comments)

Sandpoint, Idaho...A huge buyers' opportunity in a piece of Paradise. HOMES OF SANDPOINT (updated pricing!) Sandpoint, Idaho is a destination "vacation" town in North, Idaho with giant water (Lake Pend Oreille) and a world-class ski mountain (Schweitzer Mountain Resort).  The beauty of Sandpoint is that it also is a "real" town with a long and colorful history.  (Not dissimilar to my "adult hometown" of Aspen, Colorado).  Sandpoint is the type of town that feels like home even when you are immersed in the spectacular beauty of the area.  You can choose homes in one of Sandpoint's Lakefront communities, in one of … (4 comments)

schweitzer mountain resort: HELP! I can't wipe the smile off my face! - 03/29/09 07:18 AM
I woke up this morning and the weatherman graced Sandpoint, Idaho with 6 fresh inches of snow.  I was in my office at Schweitzer Mountain Resort and on AR by 7:30 a.m.  By 8:45, I had my mocha at Mojo Coyote Coffee and was in the lift line (a total of 6 people) waiting fresh tracks on top of chair 1.

My excited anticipation was well founded.  The very first run down the headwall below the chair greeted me with stashes of untracked powder at least 14" deep.  The powder was smashing against my knees...and untracked top to bottom!

schweitzer mountain resort: How is this for a RECESSION BUSTER?...GO SKIING! - 02/08/09 10:14 AM
You know, the economy is tough on everyone.  The stimulus plan is questionable.  Almost 10% of America is officially unemployed.  Life is a downer.  NOT!
Guess what?  Life goes on and we can defeat the pessimissim.  What really matters is what goes on in our heads.  I just finished a day of phenominal skiing at Schweitzer Mountain and there is no way life can get any better.  It's not just about skiing...skiing is just MY motivational tool.  Find that tool and use it!
Skiing does take a financial commitment, but the benefits far outweigh the expense.  ...but it is not just … (4 comments)

This brings me to tennis in Sandpoint, Idaho...yet another reason to look at Sandpoint for retirement, 2nd home or a career move.  I can't wait for the weather to cooperate and start the new season.  We have a very active tennis community and a long season to enjoy the sport.  It is not rare to head up to SCHWEITZER … (4 comments)
