North Carolina Artist Profile:  Amy Wald of Chimney Rock Bark and Twig

Some great North Carolina artists and artisans attend the large craft fairs in the Raleigh area.
One of those artists is Amy Wald, of Chimney Rock, NC.  I really enjoyed visiting her booth at the Lazy Daze arts and crafts festival in downtown Cary, NC just a few weeks ago.
Amy Wald creates unique rustic furniture and accessories, the most notable of which is framed art like this painting of a bear.
Amy creates the frames and partners with the paintings of other local artists.

nc: Relocating to Raleigh? All About Local Banks - Raleigh/Clayton/Wendell Areas - 03/06/08 09:04 PM
RELOCATING TO THE TRIANGLE? Have you thought about where you'll be banking?
When we first moved to the area, my husband and I didn't even think about needing to switch banks. But, once we realized that our current bank wasn't located in Raleigh, we started looking for a new bank.  We had no idea what banks were available or how many branches each of the banks had - we just knew that we couldn't deposit a paycheck or write a check until we set up an account with a local bank!
If you're relocating to the Triangle, here's a guide to local … (0 comments)

Horse Communities - New Homes that Allow Horses
Honey, I would love to move, but what about the horses? Do you think they will feel comfortable in North Carolina?
While there are all kinds of horse boarding advertisements out on the wonderful worldwide web, none of it really gave me that personal, objective feeling that I want when considering long-term arrangements for my equestrian friends.  If you're considering relocation to the Raleigh area, or moving cross town, come along with me on my tour of some of the local facilities.

Rainwater Collection Systems in the Raleigh Area
Worried about water restrictions and the condition of your lawn?  You may want to consider a rain collection system.
Remember water pouring out of your gutters, down the driveway, and into the storm drain in a Southern summer rainstorm, only to have to add to your water bill four days later when your parched lawn urges you to get out the hose? What if that water didn't have to travel all the way through storm drains, to creeks and streams, into the lake, then to the water treatment plant, then back through … (24 comments)

nc: Scary headlines - Just something to sell papers with? Take a closer look at Raleigh real estate numbers. - 12/12/07 05:09 AM
Scary headlines, lately. Triangle home resales down 26.5% in October. If we go by what we read in the press, the market sounds as good as dead.

What a surprise to potential buyers, who think they can pick up a home for nearly nothing, only to find that home sales in the Triangle remain very much alive - especially in hot price points.
What's causing the perception that the news is all bad, when sales are still hopping?
Focusing on a small part of the picture. Concentrating on resale numbers, without factoring in new home sales.

North Carolina Zoos - Asheboro Zoo
If you're looking for something different to do, and you haven't yet been to the N.C. Zoo in Asheboro, pack a lunch, grab your backpack, and hop in the car.  After a beautiful drive in the fall color down highway 64, just over an hour from Cary, you'll find yourself at a nationally recognized zoo.
Noted for its natural habitats, the NC Zoo was the first zoo designed from the start to get rid of the cages and iron bars and give animals homes that closely resemble those found in the wild.
With almost 5 miles of walking paths, … (0 comments)

nc: Gem Mining - A Great Weekend Activity - 11/21/07 01:14 AM
Do your kids like to play in the mud?  How about hide and seek?  Got any little (or big) pirates that enjoy hunting for buried treasure?  Then you and your family may want to try gem mining in one of North Carolina's rich recreational mines.   Many mines focus on emeralds.   Emeralds are North Carolina's state stone for good reason - this state has more emeralds than any other, and has produced emeralds as large as 1500 carats.
If you'd like to try your luck, one of the closest gem mines to the Triangle area is in Pittsboro, a very short drive … (2 comments)
