Years ago, when we put our first home on the market, I insisted that the Realtor put NO SIGN in our yard. I did not want neighbors to know that we were selling or cause any disruption in our neighborhood. Our agent tried to explain the importance of a sign, but I was the incalcitrant client–and we ended up selling the home with NO SIGN. This of course, was before the internet and Realtor.com, Zillow, Trulia and all the other listing aggregators. And in those days, the wish for privacy was something that was respected by almost all. realtorcom: Most Visited Real Estate Web Sites: WOW!

Realtor.com is surely thumping its chest over its domination for market share and eyeballs, but other interesting observations can be gleaned from this recent Hitwise report, which released real estate induustry-wide 2007 rankings of more than 100 sites. I immediately noted that Trulia.com has passed Zillow. And that MSN Real Estate beats both Yahoo Real Estate and HomeGain. Like, WOW! More than anything, I am amazed at Trulia's surprised showing and wish to offer Pete Flint and crew a bouquet of fireworks. Congratulations to all!

I have only begun to wrap my brain around the concept of "long tail" as it applies to real estate searches. I begin to get an inkling of the concept when our oldest son calls me into his room to hear some exotic and esoteric music he has downloaded and added to his massive i-tune list . These are musicians who have never made anybody's top 40 list, but have someway fluted and drummed their way into our home.
