Orange Lake -  In the Heart of New Port Richey - Florida
In the center of New Port Richey-Florida, sits a very pretty lake known since the early 1900’s as Orange Lake. Originally thought to be a sinkhole rather than a man-made lake, it was originally called Blue Sink but there were several other lakes known as Blue Sink so the name was changed.

The area around Orange Lake was heavily forested and was known as the Jungle or the Devil’s Woodyard because cattle would wander in and never be seen again. Orange Lake is situated close to the … (18 comments)

The Clemmie Butler House in New Port Richey-Florida - A Bit of Natural History
Every time I drive by this interesting old building in New Port Richey Florida, I wondered who built it, how old it was and what purpose it served. It sits in what is now a very busy part of town but I’m sure it didn’t start out that way.

This began life as a residence about 1941 or ‘42 and was built for E.Z. Jackson; and later lived in for 30 years by Clemmie Butler. Originally, the bottom floor was a garage and the … (27 comments)

history: The Chasco Inn - The Oldest Commercial Building in New Port Richey-Florida - 11/18/11 12:47 AM
The Chasco Inn -  The Oldest Commercial Building in New Port Richey-Florida There are several stories relating to the claim that the Chasco Inn Building on Main Street is the oldest commercial building in New Port Richey-Florida. The original building, so the story goes, was the L. L. Havens Building seen here dated to 1915. In  1925, The New Port Richey Press reported the sale of the Havens building (then a post office & store) to M. H. Swafford who made changes to the appearance of the building and turned the top floor into the Harmony Hotel. The cupola was added … (21 comments)

Waters Edge in New Port Richey-FL is home to the historic Moon Lake Gardens Barn
This lovely old barn built in the 1930’s is part of the Waters Edge Subdivision in New Port Richey. It is all that is left of founder Ed Haley’s Moon Lake Gardens and Dude Ranch. The barn was the stable for 30 horses of the guests of the Moon Lake Gardens and Dude Ranch which opened in 1937.  It also housed the electric generator - electricity not being in the area at the time. There were very extensive tropical and sub-tropical gardens on the estate. … (16 comments)

Orange Lake and War Memorial in New Port Richey Florida
Orange Lake in the middle of downtown New Port Richey, Florida is located near Sims Park and Main Street. Whenever we have a festival like BikeFest, they take place in the area of Sims Park and Orange Lake. If we have a cruise-in, it is usually around the lake. I took these pictures about two weeks ago; the temperature was in the 60's with a gorgeous breeze blowing. It's a great place to bring the kids on any day.

The War Memorial stands in front of Orange Lake.

Church Built in 1919 - Turned around by a Hurricane - in New Port Richey FL
This charming building in the heart of downtown New Port Richey FL has quite a history. It is the original parish for Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. When the building was dedicated in March, 1919, it was located in a different area, and faced south. In 1921, a  strong hurricane hit the area directly and the church was heavily damaged, lifted up and brought back down to face west. Father Felix Unger, who was praying at the time, was unharmed (proving, once again, prayer … (8 comments)

history: New Port Richey FL - The McNeil Homestead 1882 in Starkey Park - 10/25/10 03:37 AM
New Port Richey FL- We took a walk through the beautiful and peaceful Starkey Park in New Port Richey one afternoon last week. It was a lovely day in the low '80's. We were walking the trail to the Mc Neil homestead, not having been to the site before, we were surprised by what we found. The peacefulness of the gravesite made us reflect on what might have happened to them. The area was a wilderness that is now bounded by Starkey Blvd (think of the German Autobahn) and the traffic can be heard at the homestead.  If you have the … (4 comments)
