How to Fix a Poor Photo
Despite what some people believe, most photographers have lots and lots of poor photos resulting from incorrect settings, bad lighting or at least poor compensation for what is available.
So what happens when we shoot things that might seem useless to save. Depending on how important the photo is, there are ways to repair most of our mistakes. We are all acquainted with photo editing programs that can make adjustments to what we see.
Sometimes it takes more than one processing approach to accomplish what we want. And sometimes even with the best efforts, the photo is not salvageable.
I would not consider … (14 comments)

The Wonder Of It All

One Christmas Holiday, a veritable swarm of black crows forced one of these magnificent animals into my hedges and it got tangled up in my Christmas Lighting. The neighbors saw it and notified me and I grabbed a white towel and went out to retrieve it. It was hanging upside down and the crows were about to attack it. When I stepped in, I was able to untangle it and I wrapped it in the towel. It's chest was heaving and I held it for some time until it was stable.
In that process, I received a gift of gratitude … (22 comments)

The Magnificent World of Color
One of the joys I have as an amature photographer is seeing things, especially flowers, scenes, plants, birds and animals that I find fascinating in their detail and coloring. From Space, the earth looks blue and white which proves that life as we know it is really about the details. I liked staring at this Parrot nearly as much as he liked staring at me. Wondering what that big black thing was in his face and that every now and then made a sound.

The Magnificent Northwest
One of the greatest pleasures in my life is to see the world around us and capture it in a way that might allow others to feel and appreciate some of the amazing beauty that is a part of our world.
The color and splendor is almost beyond ones imagination if you have never witnessed our great Northwest. I was in the end car of this train that ultimately ended it's passage to British Columbia and the visions of this wild and mostly unsettled land was breathtaking.
From the raging rivers, waterfalls and evergreen, to the giant cliffs … (59 comments)

Oops! Call out the ActiveRain Bridge Builders
I am sure we have all encountered this one time or another in our lives,  when going forward just doesn't seem possible. While the impasse does pose a problem, with creativity and diligence, we discover that all things are possible.
At ActiveRain, we are bridge builders. We build bridges of communication and skills to our industry network, our social network and especially to our communities. What is most interesting is how fast we learn these skills when we become dedicated bloggers in the Rain.
If you know of others that need help in building … (13 comments)

photography by william johnson: Transitioning a Photogaph to a Piece of Art - 09/24/11 07:44 AM

When taking photos, I always have my eye open for opportunities to create something beyond what the camera actually captures. Unique subjects or a particular category of subject often can be transitioned  from just a photograph to an art piece.
Subjects that are interesting in a black and white format for instance might lend themselves to having other effects applied that would transform them into something more unusual. One of my favorite effects for that is a pencil sketch or the pencil drawing effect.
Starting with the photo below, I applied the pencil drawing effect, trimmed it and then added … (29 comments)

Old Poway Park and the Midland Poway Railroad
As Localism posts go, I do quite a few of them showing different community assets and especially some of the marvelous events that take place at each one. One such place is the Old Poway Park where an event  this past weekend celebrated the re-enactment of the Days of the California Gold Rush.
I did a post of the event with photos of some of the marvelous characters as part of the Gold Rush Days re-enacment. What I didn't show so much of was the Old Poway Railroad in the park itself and … (22 comments)

Unusual Seahorse at Birch Aquarium in La Jolla
These are a protected species found in waters south of Australia.
I have never seen anything quite like it, but then many of species that you will see here at the Birch Aquarium are beautiful standouts in the magical undersea marine world. When I called this morning to see if I could use a monopod at the aquarium, I was greeted with an enthusiastic yes answer. Some venues will accept the monopods while they will not accept a tripod that can be a tripping hazard for their guests. So I always ask.

June 14th is Flag Day, Will you Display Your Flag?
Flag Day is June 14th and I would encourage you to celebrate this time-honored American tradition by displaying Old Glory. Here are a list of dates when it is supposed to be the most appropriate time to fly your flag but I proudly fly my Flag everyday. • New Year's Day, January 1
• Inauguration Day, January 20
• Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, third Monday in January
• Lincoln's Birthday, February 12
• Washington's Birthday, third Monday in February
• Easter Sunday (variable)• Mother's Day, second Sunday in May

I would bet any photographer would love to have this occur in their lifetime !

Fotofunia.com original photo by masaomi
I can't actually imagine this happening to me but when I saw this in Fotofunia.com as one of the selections, I thought it would be fun to give it a try and at least pretend for a moment that it would be possible. So using one of my photos, I uploaded it and it looked really interesting. Actually I thought it looked darn pretty cool! What I really can't imagine though is having a photo file large enough that could … (43 comments)

Just a Cool Photo!
When a photographer gets lucky it is more about having good light as it might be about just the subject. This stunning iridescent bird made me stop in my tracks and to see if I could get a capture of something naturally iridescent. Well, you be the judge. This guy was a real looker and in the bright afternoon sunlight, he was totally radiant.

Good Morning Hummingbird | Gotcha!
If you have ever tried to photograph a Hummingbird, if you get him at all, it is pure luck. Mostly because, unless you happen to have your camera around your neck when he appears, but the time you get it, he is long gone. This one has been coming around for a day or so and I just happened to have the camera out when he appeared. While I didn't get the best shot possible, I did get at least something I am not embarrassed to share with you.

I will be announcing the 1st … (86 comments)
