.. and more As the World Turns

I doubt many of you have seen this view of the launching pad.  with a shuttle and booster in place, and ready to take off.  It's usually a restricted area by then, very few get to see it. And it's hard to see the scale of it... take a look at some of the cars in the background to feel the size.

Here's another view of a different lift off - the sky has changed colour and created a bit more drama... c'mon, doesn't anybody see Richard Weisser's style in these... Other than the fact that they don't contain much flora or fauna, and there's no covered bridge... I think they look just like his.

Then there's a view of the midwest... showcasing beautiful Lake Michigan, along with her sister lakes.  Those of you familiar with the lakes can see more than those labeled.

For those of you who have difficulty remembering the great lakes, here's a little mnemonic that I learned as a kid ... H-O-M-E-S... Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior...

(today's teaching moment)

And the Nile delta, and that troubled region.  I don't know if it's just the gravitation-ist in me, but I've always been bothered by the Nile flowing UP, instead of DOWN.  (North instead of South)... somehow it seems wrong... don't know why.

Still not done... more to follow.

Home is where the hearth is.

Richard Weisser, Richard Weisser, Richard Weisser (why do I feel as though I should now click my heels together three times)... thanks for the feature!

Steve - Intellectually, I understand how these behemoths fly...  but when you see it, it's amazing that they can actually float in the sky.

This is insane....to see something this beautiful and to think that so many of us sit around fighting over one country and another.  Just amazing.

Alan - I could definitely see Brother Richard taking the launch pad photo.  You mentioned "Intellectually, I understand how these behemoths fly..."  That's how I felt the first time I saw a real live whale.  I knew they were big and strangely beautiful, but I never understood it until I saw one skirt by the boat, just inches away.  Made me appreciate whales in a way I can never explain.

Larry - it is inspiring, isn't it?  What a great view of the Midwest (that's me waving from the corner, down there)

Matt - that's one of the most interesting segways I've heard in a while... aerospace, to leviathans... you've got some synapses glowing now.

How about this for a rocket photo.  It was taken by my son-in-law who has written a book about rocketry and goes to all kinds of rocket shoots.  His name is Mark Canepa.  Check out his book if you like rockets.

Alan - terrific shuttle shots, I have traveled almost everywhere I wanted to, except space and I probably will never make that trip in this lifetime. But, I have seen two shuttle launches, one from the air, that was very impressive. And the Nile flowing up didn't bother me until now.

Mike... I guess the Nile flowing north (upward) is only a problem for we "Northists". There's a small contingent of people who believe that North shouldn't just arbitrarily be the top of all maps.  After all, the earth is free floating in space, there is no up or down, and therefore why couldn't/shouldn't the SOUTH pole be the top of the maps. It's just as likely that the South pole is the top of the earth.

Alan - the maps in Australia and New Zealand have north at the top. I expected them to be reversed, but, they weren't.

I think everyone uses North as UP.  (except those darn Southists)...grumble, grumble, grumble.
