By

recycleCFL Bulb and Household Battery Drop Off Program

Residents should not dispose of Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs and household batteries in the garbage for environmental reasons. Mercury from the bulbs and toxic chemicals from the batteries can leak into the ground, contaminating the water supply. The village now provides two drop off sites for the residents of Schaumburg.

I am always wondering where to get rid of these things so I thought everyone could use the post.

I agree. CFLs, fluorescents and other light bulbs containing mercury are hazardous materials, which may be illegal to place in garbage or recycle bins in some states. Check with your garbage carrier before disposal.
