There's something FISHY about Mary

Mary Steadman from San Jose, CA that is.  According to her site,  http://www.marylifeblog.com/ she fell on some hard times and lost her job.  The good news is that she has since turned it all around.

In her own words…

My name is Mary Steadman. Married 3 years to Kevin. I lost my job as a boring account rep for a manufacturing company a few months back. But here is my story on how I make $5,000+ a month by just submitting small texts and ads online on Google.

Good for you Mary!  That’s great income from just a couple of clicks.

Hey, I also looked up the Domain Owner , and it looks like you don’t actually own the site.

Hold the phone!  Looks like Mary moved!  She’s now living in Spring Grove IL http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090605072004AAOInNO

I also found that great write up of you in The Chicago Gazette News except they have a horrible URL: http://nastyornice.com/ (especially for a big newspaper).  I could go on and on.

Oh and by the way…  do you know Kevin Hoeffer from San Jose, CA?  He has http://www.kevinmakesdough.com/ and incredibly he has a very similar story!

My name is Kevin Hoeffer. Married 3 years to Audrey. I lost my job as a boring account rep for a manufacturing company a few months back. But here is my story on how I make $5,000+ a month by just submitting small texts and ads online on Google.

Looks like Jose owns that site as well.

All kidding aside, the moral of the story is that this is just another scam.  Plain and simple.  Hungry for more? Here’s a few thousand Google Scams .  Heck, even Matt Cutts, straight from Google tells everyone he can about these scams every time he speaks!

Now should you find yourself blissfully married for around 3 years * and recently lose your job as a boring account rep for a manufacturing company, step back and think about this for a minute or two.  Do I really have to say it out loud?  If something sounds too good to be true – it is!

NOTE: In case you were curious, the small $1 they initially charge you is for a "welcome packet", then there is a monthly auto charge of $60 - 100 dollars.  The system still doesn’t work, and you’ll be out $100 a month until you can cancel (if you can cancel).  Still sound good?

* Today is the our 20th wedding anniversary! (thanks dear!) Smooch!

You would think people would be a little smarter with their scams, but there's obviously people not doing their homework and falling for this, which is so sad.

Scams are everywhere!  As you stated, if it sounds to good to be true, then it is.  Congrats on 20 years!

I really have a hard time believing people really fall for this stuff...it's about as lame as the guy that keeps emailing me that some long-lost relative died (in Kenya I think) and left me millions!!

Congratulations on the 20 years!!

Mike,

Great post.  It is amazing how many scams are out there.  And how many people fall for them.  It seems that everyday, my email is full of them and now I am seeing a lot on Twitter and LinkedIn.  I have even received one here on ActiveRain.

I recently read a couple of reports on the number of people who fall for the scams.  I can't find the numbers, but it was huge.  a recent article in Great Britian estimated that 1 in 15 people are victims of scams.

Although we often think of the victims as elderly and we always think of them as someone else, it can happen to anyone.  Stephan Greenspan is a psychologist who specializes in gullibility.  he recently wrote an article about how he lost money with Bernard Madoff.  It is an interesting article in the WSJ: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123093987596650197.

Why waste time on stuff that we all know is bogus.  Or at least we SHOULD know.

How interesting to find this blog.  I was on googlenews reading something about Sarah Palin's resignation and off to the right there was this ad saying Mary Steadman from Searcy Arkansas blah....blah....blah.  So then I googled her.  Searcy is a small town so everyone should know her if she lives here.  Your blog popped up!  But what an effective advertisement.  They knew where I was from and she pops up from every city, I guess, as people are on google.  Thanks for the blog!  Now I'm off to see if the one claiming all that weight loss is really from Searcy Arkansas.

Barbara - It't a simple script that tracks your ISP and then puts that info wherever they want.  Check out the very bottom of my sidebar on my website http://AreWeConnected.com

Mike, I went there and found Searcy Arkansas!  It is a clever way to advertise.  I also found that the weight loss lady, Alyssa Johnson, is not from Searcy either.  Does she pull up for every town also?  One thing difficult about your site was having to scroll back and forth across to read it.  Is this fixable? My monitor is pretty big, too.

Barbara - what's your screen resolution set at?  My main column is 625 with two 200 wide side columns.

I just upped it based on what I was seeing...

Mike, I don't know what my resolution is set at but most screens pull up fine.  Your screen looked like the above just now.  Earlier it was much worse to have to scroll.
