1980 Society newsA couple of days ago I put the hospital news from March 18 1980 in my blog.

It was a regular part of the Searcy Daily News and highly read.

*************

Today I think it's fun to put up another feature.

This one is the society news column that was written by Helen Bauer for many years.

Lots of people laughed even then about how it was totally unimportant if a person went shopping in Little Rock or a kid came home from college to visit.

Reading through this brings back smiles and memories.  I still know a lot of these people and we all considered them part of high-society if they were in this column.

Read back and enjoy old memories, Searcy folks!  I was a little taken back by the mention of a Sherry party.  I assume they meant Sherry Wine???

Barbara, I remember when the paper had a section like that---I used to think it was pretty weird even then---but this was the facebook of the times I guess:)

Charles, I wish I'd thought of that.  It probably was the facebook of the time.  Little bits of knowledge that no one cared a tweet about.  The good thing was there was as employee who did this and the paper was profitable.  How much longer this will last is worrisome because I love my newspaper.

I recently saw a demonstration of a newspaper going to print and was surprised how manual the process remains. Guessing our grandkids not only won't recognize a record player but also a newspaper. The morning newspaper was a ritual around our house growing up.

Barbara,

I remember when on the radio we would report the equivalent of a meatloaf fire in some guys oven. Today, here, the local paper does not even bother with essential news.

Wow, all these poor women have no first names. I'd hate to be called a Mrs. Jimmy whomever.

Kate, I once saw the huge presses run also. I was very impressed.  That's been a few years and they tend to "bite the dust."  I don't know what is going to be used in the future.

Steven, sounds like a typical city newspaper now.  No money for reporters and fewer people subscribing to the papers.

Elizabeth, more of the same wasn't it.  Women with no identities except for the husband!  Do you think people still have sherry parties?

Sure people still have sherry parties but it's called an after dinner drink now. If it's more than one after dinner drink, then it's a party. LOL.

Elizabeth, I believe sherry was for non-drinkers.  It was medicinal.
