Quality of Life in Northern Nevada - Hiking in Reno

I love living and working in Northern Nevada. I say that a lot, but that’s because I am reminded daily of the many benefits of this wonderful area. For instance, I went for my daily hike with the dogs this morning at one of my favorite spots. The Keystone Trailhead.

I actually start my hike behind Hilltop Park and come up the back way over Upper Peavine Dam. Looking to the west, there are beautiful views of the Sierras.

If you enjoy the stark beauty of the high dessert, this is a way to get in 2 to 5 miles while just 10 minutes from downtown Reno. In fact, once you head up and across the Reno R you have a great view of downtown’s high rises sitting in the morning valley mist.

My dogs love to run and chase huge jackrabbits or little cottontails (no, they don’t even come close to catching them!!!). While well-behaved dogs are frequently off leash in this open range area, they must listen to your “come” command, since there are several coyote that live in this ravine.

My two big guys roam free, but the Dachshund is on leash, since she can not be trusted to not chase the coyotes. We are generally out at daybreak, so we frequently run across a pair (or three) of these cagey creatures in spring and fall, but after 3 years of pretty close encounters they have always given my pack a wide berth…. Must be the dachshund.

Living and working in Northern Nevada I have the luxury of having gorgeous nature very conveniently located close to my back yard. How can you beat that for quality of life!!!

Hi Bobbi. Reminds me of hiking the trails in AZ.  We also love being able to go hiking here with our dogs. What a great life!

Bobbi:  Looks a little like my neck of the woods, (Temecula Wine Country), and we have hot air balloons as you do in your previous post.

Thanks Jane! You're down around the north eastern San Diego County area right? I love it down there!! In my pre-real estate days I worked for Harrah's, they have a property down there. The area here in Reno is very similar in the summer (when we are hot and dry). Of course we get a bit more variation in weather in the winter. I'll be very jealous of you down there when the snow is flying here! Although I admit, I even love it here when winter comes. Call me crazy!

I've always loved the mountains, what a great walk.  No mountains here!

Bobbi - Your "pack" sounds a little like mine.  My three 'fur babies" love to roam the hills in our area and while we also let them roam free, we do have to watch out for the coyotes too.  We have a 90lb male Goldie, a 50lb male Springer mix and a 25lb female Corgi mix and guess who's the boss - yep, the Corgi.  Thx for sharing your brood.  :)

Glad you have the wide open space for your dogs to run free. I'm sure they enjoy your hikes as much as you do.What a fabulous way to start the day.

Since we live on a small island city, we don't have the same kind of places to allow the dogs off-leash. So we take our dogs to the big dog park -- and they're happy just running around with their other furry friends that do not include coyotes.

That's the nice thing about dogs: they're so easy to please. Just take them out for a long walk and they're good for the rest of the day.

Cindy, I've been to Houston....you're right, flat as a pancake, but I thought it was a great city!!! Not sure I could live there only because I love the mountains so much!

Pacita, I loved your post with the dog getting colored upon!

Donna, great pack! My babies are both big, but the dachshund (my daughters dog, but she like to hike with the big guys) is the feistiest!

i think its great that they allow them to be off leash in open range areas, theres nothing my 'kids' love more than to be a ble to run free and explore, theyre all very well trained and i can trust them not to run off, but they enjoy themselves when we go back country camping here :) i dont thin ki could live in a big city where they couldnt do that lol...
