Goodbye Summer - Hello Fall - Are 100 Degree Days Behind Us San Antonio?

Fall arrives in San Antonio.

After one of the hottest Summers on record here in San Antonio (59 days of 100 degrees or more weather - with 5 of them hitting 104 degrees) and a drought that has looked like it will never end, I awoke to this as the scene in my backyard this morning.  It's not pouring and it's certainly not the kind of Fall I grew up with back in Philadelphia, but today is most certainly not Summer.  Today is the first day of Fall and the weather wanted to be sure we knew it here in San Antonio.

My good friends at KSAT News warned me it was coming and I knew it would eventually, but to wake up to 69 degrees, light drizzle, and an expected high of 79 degrees just proved it to me.  While some of you from parts further north might laugh at 79 degrees signaling the end of Summer, it certainly does here in San AntonioFall has arrived and although I won't get the beautiful leaves of Pennsylvania and the Northeast, if you look close I do have tiny leaves all over my deck.  I've never been quite sure, but they seem like they might be seed pods.  I'm not very good at being an arborist, so I'll just have to accept that I'm not sure of much, except they stick to your feet and get all over the house (which drives my wife nuts).

Of course, here in San Antonio, we still have plenty of great weather ahead of us.  When I first moved here, I was wearing shorts well into November.  Looks like this week will be some rain, but as anyone who lives here can tell you...we could use every drop we can find.

If you're looking for quick and easy weather maps, temperatures, radar, aquifer levels (very important to us in San Antonio), and the ever-amusing "Haircast" - look no further than KSAT News' JustWeather.com.

Edward - Funny how when I lived in Pennsylvania I would be excited to see clear skies, now I can't wait to see thick clouds.  My how times have changed.

Oh man...it rained two inches here in Austin, Texas last night and it's going to be nice and cool for a "littkle' while...is this your first year in Texas? just curious because even though today is the first day of Fall, Summer is not really over until around Halloween!

FYI...Your new picture is HD, right? You have a rather bemused (or is it befuddled) look on your face  and I know know you are a lot younger! I'm just sayin'...

Matt:

I have visited San Antonio and it is a lovely place.  But, do you miss the fall foliage?

I lived in San Francisco for ten years.  When I was there I only missed two things from New England - my family and the Autumn leaves.

It is POURING here in Houston.  Lots of t*storms yesterday - knocked out power with the high winds.  Lovely.  I won't miss the 100+ temps but could we have a little balance?   You are so right about November & wearing shorts!

I imagine we might get a couple more 100-degree days. Yesterday sure felt like one! Don't put away the shorts just yet.

Cheers,

Robin

Laura - Keep that puppy warm!  My cats were outside this morning and not at all happy about that.  Of course, they refused to come inside as well.  The two of them will probably drive me insane before long.

Russell - No this is the end of year three.  I'm not really saying goodbye to summer just yet.  This week it looks like I will be though!

Russell (again) - That's my official "Oh hello there, Mr. Camera" face.

Claudette - I guess I do miss it occasionally.  I miss the snow sometimes too.  Then I wake up, throw on some shorts and go enjoy the warmth in November.  I missed rain when I lived in Los Angeles too, but I got over it.

Gary - My dad and step-mom live in Pittsburgh.  I would go home every year when I lived in Los Angeles and celebrate Christmas with them.  When I got home and arrived back at my place, I would call my dad and say "Hey dad, I just opened all my windows.  It's 80 degrees."  Then I would promptly hang up.  It made me laugh as I knew it was bitter cold where I had just been.  He thought it was amusing the first time.

Susan - It's been pretty consistent here today.  Only a bit of lighting and thunder though.  It looks like it might be letting up a bit now though.

Robin - My shorts are always available and at the ready since moving here.  There is no such thing as "packing away the summer wardrobe."

Hi Matt:

I don't think that we even had one day this year that made it to 100

Very mild summer this year in NJ

Toula - This one was a scorcher down here.  Hot days and very long drought.  My trees look pitiful and what grass I still have is mostly weeds.  But I love the heat, so I'm not too upset by it.
