The Top 10 most populated cities in the United States

Can anyone guess the top 10 most populated cities in the United States?  I know it would be easy enough to come up with the answer by searching the internet, or getting on Google, but try and come up with them on your own first.

I thought this would be interesting because there are certain cities that you hear about all the time, and I wondered if that was because of their population.  Well, I was surprised by what I discovered.

Here are the top 10 most populated cities in the United States, according to Wikipedia, and estimated by the United States Census Bureau as of July 1, 2008:

Rank City   State   Population
1 New York New York 8,363,710
2 Los Angeles California 3,833,995
3 Chicago Illinois 2,853,114
4 Houston Texas 2,242,193
5 Phoenix Arizona 1,567,924
6 Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1,447,395
7 San Antonio Texas 1,351,305
8 Dallas Texas 1,279,910
9 San Diego California 1,279,329
10 San Jose California    948,279

Okay, so no surprises with New York City and Los Angeles, but what I didn't know was that New York City had a population over two times that of Los Angeles.  The size of New York City is only 305 square miles, while Los Angeles is 498.3 square miles.  The one city that did surprise me was San Jose, California, which has a larger population than San Francisco.  As you can see, There are 3 California cities, as well as 3 Texas cities in the top 10.

The population in Phoenix, believe it or not, has doubled since 1980.  It is one of the fastest growing larger cities in the United States.  Chicago and Philadelphia have decreased in population over the past decade.

There are 273 total cities with populations over 100,000, and you can see them all here.

So, how many of these cities did you get right?  Are there any cities you thought would be on this list that are nowhere to be found?

Troy:  No real surprised for me as far as the list is concerned... but then again... I usually watch the changes when the list comes out.  Although Dallas has a population of 1,279,910... it really cannot get much bigger.  Most of the open spaces where it can expand to... are built-up.  Fort Worth, by contract, has open space in just about every direction... which leads most to believe that sooner or later it will surpass Dallas in population.

I just hit the link and checked on Fort Worth, and it comes in at number 17... with just over 703,000 residents.  I would guess... maybe ten years and it will pass Dallas.  Just my two cents as an amateur demographer.

Karen - There are some cities that are much more built out than others.  Like you said, Dallas cannot get much bigger.  However, here in Phoenix, we still have plenty of room to grow.  Phoenix as a city is relatively young.

I am surprised to see Phoenix ranked so high.  I also would have expected Kansas City and St. Louis to have ranked higher on the list than it did.  Interesting.

I thought Atlanta and San Francisco might be in the top ten. I wonder how the rankings would be for metro areas. The Las Vegas valley has somewhere around 1.8 to 2 million people.

Lina - Phoenix, as well as other Arizona cities have really grown just since I moved here in 1996.  For example, Chandler did not even have a population of 100,000 when we moved here, and now it is approaching 250,000 (more than doubling in 13 years).

John - Yeah, you sure hear a lot about Atlanta and San Francisco in the media.  If you look at the metro areas, the numbers do change a little bit.

These are surprising Troy but I hang around with someone who follows these statistics religiously and is often testing me.  I keep forgetting them, so this was a great reminder.  I wonder how they are basing New York and L.A. because the City of L.A. is just that - Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood for example are all fully incorporated cities, part of Los Angeles County.  Interesting.

Jane - The statistics I ran were strictly cities, not metropolitan areas.  If I ran a search by metro area, the totals would be significantly different.  Nice that you have a friend to keep you informed about these so you don't have to.

The problem with L.A. is that Beverly Hills, Santa Monica etc. are right in the middle so I really do think they may be counting those as part of L.A. proper, but who knows.

Georgie - Well, as of the 2015 Census Philadelphia passed Phoenix buy just over 4,000 people, and San Diego passed Dallas by over 94,000. The largest percentage increase out of the top 10 cities since 2010 was San Antonio, which grew by 10.73%.
