"School has begun anew after what seemed like a short summer vacation. After making up for the snow days last year, the beginning of summer was certainly later than normal. With the near record breaking rain, summer just couldn't seem to get started. Suddenly, it was time to return to school. Where did that free time go?! People frequently ask if I am off in the summer and I have to refrain from launching into the litany of all the work that we have saved to do over the summer break. This is the time for curriculum revising, administrator meetings, and planning for any changes. This year is further complicated by teacher negotiations, adding portables to the high school, construction at the high school, and preparations for a possible H1N1 outbreak. All of this is important for a smooth operation of the school district, but what I enjoy most is getting to know the new teachers who are hired over the summer to replace those who have retired or left. No matter how much curriculum revision or planning we do as a district, the most important aspect of your children's education is what happens in the classroom. The high expectations and positive relationships developed by our outstanding teachers make all the difference in children's lives and how they value their learning. We are so fortunate to be able to attract a sizable pool of high caliber candidates when we have an opening, so we can choose the best fit for Newtown. This year we will be focusing on our strategic plan developed over the past year with the input and volunteered time of over 100 Newtown residents. Our mission includes the statement to INSPIRE EACH STUDENT TO EXCEL, but to accomplish that, it takes more than words on a paper or lots of planning. To realize our mission, we need our strong, caring, and dedicated teaching staff all focused on this mission and working as partners with our parent community. A strong teacherparent bond increases the chances for that student to be a successful learner. Since we all want the same result successful students we will dedicate ourselves to communicate and work together for the sake of building the best education for our children. It is all about the students!"
