I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a class taught by Rick DeLuca at the Utah Association of Realtors convention at the Zermatt Resort in Midway, Utah this past week. I wanted to take the opportunity to share an interesting insight from a great teacher. I can't remember the article source that he quoted but the gist of the article was a study conducted about the level of commitment workers had throughout our country.
According to Rick, the numbers came back that:
- 70% of all people surveyed claimed they did the bare minimum when it came to their jobs.
- They punched in at 8am, punched out at 5pm, took an hour lunch, and 2 15 minute breaks
- They did very little if anything but punch a clock, stay off the radar, and collect a paycheck
- The real interesting part of the survey is this: 20% of all people surveyed claimed they did less than the minimum!
- They showed up a few minutes late, left a few minutes early, maybe took a pen home with them, took longer breaks, etc.
- This means that only 10% of all people surveyed claimed they did more than the minimum.
What do we learn from this??? Well, if we want to be in the top 10% of our field we just have to do more than the minimum. Wow, what a concept. As I look around our industry it isn't surprising that to get to the top 10% you just have to do a little more than the minimum. Many people get into real estate because they want to make a lot of money with little effort. They want to be their own boss (which to them means that they never have to go to work).
For all those who have been following me and wondering where I disappeared to, I sincerely apologize. I have opened the new brokerage and I am following my dream. To quote a hero...."I'll see you at the top!" Zig Ziglar
