The United States Golf Association made it official when it announced that the U.S. Open will return to Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014.

The announcement came at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, site of this year's U.S. Open. The world-renowned Pinehurst Resort previously hosted U.S. Opens in 1999 and 2005. It had been speculated since the final day of the 2005 Open that the USGA would bring the national championship back to the Donald Ross-designed No. 2 course. It was just a question of when. The earliest possible date was 2014.

The USGA does not maintain an official rotation of Open courses. But there is a small group that the USGA considers prime locations, and Pinehurst is among them. The USGA has made no secret of its passion for Pinehurst.

Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club is holding an unprecedented third U.S. Women's Open June 28-July 1, and Pinehurst No. 2 now joins that Ross design in making golf history.

The two previous U.S. Opens in Pinehurst were considered among the best ever. The late Payne Stewart won in 1999 with a memorable par putt on the 18th green, while Michael Campbell pulled a major shocker in holding off a charge by Tiger Woods to win the title in 2005.

The timing of the announcement also came as a nice present for the famed No. 2 course, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

"One hundred years after No. 2 opened, it continues.
