The Senate is slated to take up a bill this week that extends unemployment benefits and it might include an extension of the $8,000 homebuyer tax credit. Proponents of the first-time homebuyer tax credit that is due to expire Nov. 30 were planning to offer amendments to unemployment benefits bill that would extend and possibly expand the tax credit. But now it appears Senate lenders are working on a compromise that could be tucked into the bill as a manager's amendment. Such an approach would increase the chances that the first-time homebuyer tax credit would be extended by at least six months. And depending on the costs, it might include features of a proposal sponsored by Senators Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., that extends the tax credit through June 30. The Dodd-Isakson-Lieberman proposal expands the tax credit to all buyers and raises the income limits to $150,000 for individuals and $300,000 for joint returns.

Keep your fingers crossed.  There is a battle, but the outcome is not done yet.    We'll see!

Larry- I would like to see it extended but lowered 8 grand is too much imho why not 7grand?  Or 6?  Lets make it $500 down and the govt pays all closing costs up to X dollars?  We all know buyers dont have any cash.  But something is better than nothing.

Larry - I am not sure what raising the income level will accomplish, most first time buyers won't be affected. And for those making more than that, an $8000 credit won't be that much of an incentive.

The bill I read about from Johnny I. is to raise it to $15K and make it available to everyone, not just first time home buyers.

I have great trepidation about the current bill and extending it, much less increasing it.  The reasons are, how will tax payers ever pay for the debt we now have, much less creating more?  How does taxing everyone to help a pitiful few buy a home really helping the housing industry?  We need to fix the problem.  The problem is J-O-B-S.  When jobs are plentiful and pay well, people buy homes.  It really is that simple.

The politicians get elected and re-elected by buying votes.  Those schemes have put this Nation in horrific debt (along with Bush's spending on war).  The sad fact is, we the people are going to have to stop these loons from stealing from the unborn if this is ever going to stop.

Our dollar continues to lose value...very quickly now.  Does anyone understand what happens to a Country when their currency loses value?

We are allowing the corrupt politicians to ruin our Nation in my opinion.

I would appreciate feedback from others on this issue.  Thanks.

Bobbi....me too.  Thanks

Larry....something is better than nothing.

Mike....I agree whole heartedly.  Only those who watch their pennies will benefit.

Georgia....I get disgusted at the way that we print money.  The United States is not what is used to be.  We are no longer the United States of America.  I am talking about an industry issue here, but I'm so conservative when it comes to sending.  I dread the way the government prints and spends our money.  The Chinese own most of our debt and now we are the debtor, not the lender.  Very unbibilical to say the least.

I really think it is time to let the FTHBTC die.  It is primarily taking future sales... so the longer it runs, the less effective it bocomes, and the more destructive it will be when it ends.

Larry,

The real estate market still needs help and this would provide it. The hoped-for demand just isn't there, for obvious reasons, so this would give it some more kick.

Lane....perhaps you're right, but sitting by and doing nothing?  My biggest beef is that of the government printing money and jacking the debt.  Just so stupid.  ON the flipside, every recession that's ended????  Real estate has been the leading force to take us out.

Esko....good words.

I truely think like Cash For Clunkers, it just moves future sells to this quarter. Truly would you buy a home thinking the Government is going to give you $8000. off your taxes. I want the money now, so if I was going to buy a home it wouldn't matter either way. But that is me and of course everyone else is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong they are. :)

I hate Obama's "print money and everything will be alright" philosophy.....but if they are....real estate should take the lead.
