Reminder To Replace Smoke Detector Batteries

By

It is that time again.

Everyone needs to replace your batteries in you smoke detectors this weekend when you change your clocks. You need to do it before going to bed this Saturday night. It's a safety tip that save lives.

The change from daylight saving time to standard time is a good reminder to replace smoke detector batteries. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, and clocks are to be turned back one hour.

(Fall; fall back / spring; spring ahead)

At this time of year remember to have your fireplace services as well.

Also this time of year it is important to have a CO2 detector. If you have anything that burns fossil fuels you should have at least one in your home; example oil burning furnace.

Be safe!

Good reminder. All of us should pass the word on to our clients and friends. Have a safe Halloween.

I never thought about using the time change as a reminder to change the batteries.  Good idea.  Thank you.

Thanks for the post...and if you dont' remember you'll get to hear that annoying beeping sound we so often hear when entering a short sale home!

Heather and Jeff:  Speaking of smoke detectors... I had an unusual thing happen two nights ago.  Every time there was a thunder boom and a flash of lightning... my smoke detectors "chirped."  No smoke, no fire, just the thunder and lightning, and then they chirped... just like if I had been doing what I refer to as "cooking."  LOL.  Any ideas ?

By the way... most folks just turn their clocks back one hour... and try and use that extra hour to catch up on sleep.  I wonder if I could possibly turn my own clocks back twenty-five hours... would I be able to sleep for an entire day ?  LOL.  Prolly not, huh ?  Darn...

Karen,

Very good question about the chirping during a storm.

Are they hard wired or battery operated or both?

With an electric storm it could be a surge in power.

The smoke detector would need to be hard wired for that to apply.

Not sure.

Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years; NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends replacement.

Heather and Jeff:  They are both battery and hard-wired.  And... they are in a brand-new apartment.  So... depending on how long they were on the shelf at the supplier... they are "new."
