Beware of Home Improvement Books

Yesterday (1/08/2010) almost one million home improvement books under the "Lowe's" and "Sunset" brands were recalled by the publisher Oxmoor House of Birmingham Alabama. One other additional lesser known brand "AmeriSpec" was included in the recall.

not thisThe recall was over inaccurate do-it-yourself diagrams on how to do electrical wiring for basic home improvements and repairs to water gardens and general wiring. These books were published from the beginning of 1975 through the end of 2009. So in other words, anytime during the past 35 years. Yikes!

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said that while no incidents have been reported, people could be shocked or a fire hazard could be created.

I am reluctant to give out even more specific information because my feeling is that do-it-yourself types should not proceed to do electrical wiring, even if they think they have good instructions. Get a pro for that. Please! But, in the interest of completeness:

The number to call for more information is 866-696-7602

The web link to the recall for specific book titles, cover photos, and ISBN codes is:

Home Improvement Books Recalled by Oxmoor House Due to Faulty Wiring Instructions; Shock or Fire Hazard to Consumers

Once again, take care, and call a pro . . .

Frank I have heard about these defects for some time but have yet to see what they actually are----would love to find one of these books.  You don't have one do you?  I would love to have one for teaching purposes.

Sorry Charlie, I've never had the need for one, but I bet we could probably find one at a used book store, since the recall just came out yesterday, and they might not react so quickly as Lowes will. But, I'd love to have this one:

wiring

Frank, I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone.  We have been talking about these books in class for a couple of years---I am wondering if the info has been floating around for a while and now they are finally getting to the official recall?  Strange---beam me up Scottie:)

To answer your question Charlie - - - Newspaper Story:  Originally published Friday, January 8, 2010 at 4:22 PM

By The Associated Press Recall: Home-improvement books with bad advice "Lowe's and Sunset home-improvement titles are among the books being recalled because errors in technical diagrams and wiring instructions could cause people to be shocked or create a fire hazard. Some of the books were sold over 30 years . . . "

Good question Bill. I suppose if the book burned up with the house, we'll never know.
