"I've fallen and I can't get up!"...for real!

fallen 2

Ok, we all remember this and can't help but let out a little chuckle, (although the situation is not very funny...just their portrayl of it) But, seriously...have you ever thought about what would happen to your business, your family, your finances etc... if you had a serious fall?

Things like that always seem to happen to other people...don't they? Well I need to tell you that at any given moment, you can become the "other people".   We are fragile, our bodies have limits and are bound by the laws of nature. Our gaurdian angels work very hard to protect us from unseen dangers, but accidents DO happen.

My husband is Mr. precaution. He always tells me to drive safe, be careful, watch this, make sure you secure that. Well...5 months ago, he became the "other people". He fell from a ladder while painting an exterior for one of my properties and suffered severe crush injuries to his spine. By the grace of God, and those gaurdian angels, he was not paralyzed and is recovering fairly well.

Wake up call...you bet! I had never really thought about what would happen if something like this were to happen. We are both self employed. We have liability insurance but that covers "other" people. I always thought workman's comp was something you got for your employees, not yourself.

So my husband is out of commission for 4 months, unable to work. Thankfully my kids aren't tiny babies so they were able to help look after him a bit because I had to keep moving...more now than ever!

I'm in my warehouse lifting chairs over my head, 10 feet in the air on a flimsy alluminum ladder and I start to think about all the times I almost fell and just laughed it off. But now I'm thinking, what if I fell right now and broke my leg...both of us unable to work. Scary stuff.

So what do you do? GET WORKMAN"S COMP FOR YOURSELF if you are self employed. My quote was  just over $20 per month. Well worth the peace of mind in knowing you are covered.

Again, I thank God for getting us through this tough time. Faith works! But I will definately be more careful when I climb and make sure I get the coverage I need to protect my family.

Thanks Maureen!

John...you knew because you were one of the "other people" You were lucky to have been covered. It is such a different ball game when you are self employed. So many things you take for granted. Yet still...I wouldn't have it any other way, I love what I do!

Glad everyone is on the mend.  A nice reminder for all of us.  I just had a very minor accident, and it has slowed me down--a major one would be disastrous.

Wow, that's great information. I didn't know you could get that coverage. Just 3 days ago I strained my hip so badly I literally couldn't walk. I was wondering how I was going to de-stage a model home this coming weekend. Terrified it would take weeks or months to heal. Happy ending - the anti-inflammatory my doc gave me worked amazingly well and I'm zooming around. On top of that the developer decided to keep the model home up longer. Whew!! Narrow escape --- this time. Sounds like wake up calls are happening all over the place. Best wishes for your husband's speedy and full recovery.

Wow, I'm glad you are ok...makes you think. We stock all of our own furniture and I do not have a crew so my sister and I are the ones lugging the furniture in and out of these properties. All it takes is to drop a heavy piece on your foot or slip and your done for!

Thank You for the well wishes.

Deb...call me Moday from the conference...I'm so jealous! Have a great time and soak up all that great staging information & motivation.
