Tumwater, WA was first called New Market, but the Chinook Indian word for waterfall gave it the name Tumwater. Pretty fitting since the city sits on the Deschutes River with Tumwater Falls Park providing space to play, watch the salmon return up the river to spawn, and walk the river trail to watch the cascading water.
In the 1950's, Tumwater saw another route run through it as the I-5 freeway cut right through the city to create the current freeway corridor that runs all the way from California to the Washington/Canadian border. The highway construction permanently separated the area known as Tumwater Hill from the other side of the freeway where the Tumwater Brewery sat.
