Memorial Day.........

What does Memorial Day stand for? A day off? The start of summer? Parades and picnics? The opening of public swimming pools? You can — finally! — start wearing white shoes again?

Most Americans don't know much about Memorial Day's purpose or history. That's a pity because it removes an important bond with those brave men, and women, who have given their lives in our Nation's service.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery

There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War:

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps."

Memorial Day Holiday

. Americans can help to honor those that given their lives in the following ways:
  • Place flags or flowers on the graves of those heroes that have died serving our country.
  • Visit memorials that have been built to honor our fallen heroes.
  • Fly the United States flag at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day.
  • Participate in the "Moment of Remembrance" in order to reflect on the meaning of the Memorial Day holiday.
  • Listen to "Taps" which is the official bugle call of military funerals.
  • Attend a local ceremony which remembers the heroes of war.

Do not forget those that have given their life to protect ours. Take time to celebrate the Memorial Day Holiday in your own way.

Thank you for reminding us all that our military shall never be forgotten, those that have fallen and those that are currently serving.  More and more programs need to be developed to help them out in obtaining housing and benefits.

It was also called Decoration Day for quite some time, families and friends would honor the fallen by decorating their graves with bunting, flags, flowers. Every once in awhile a bill is proposed to change the date back to May 30, where it was celebrated for so long. This in order to minimize the 3 day weekend holiday feel about the day and help remind people about what it is really all about.

What ever your politics, what ever your religion, take some time Monday to thank those who have served and sacrificed, and those who are still serving in order to assure that you have the right to speak your mind politically and worship, or not, in the manner that you chose.

It's a great day to fall on our knees and faces and seek God for Our Country, Our Leaders, Remember our Fallen Soldiers who sacrificed themselves for Freedom, and Pray for Forgiveness. I'm so thankful that God has the Whole World in His Hands.

Don,

How true it is that the ones who give everything they have including their lives seem to be  forgotten heros....

The ones who survive deserve a hero's welcome. a nice home and certainly better medical care and services then we now so sparingly dole out to them...

May God forgive us ......Bless you...

Yes we at the very least owe these fallen hero's our admiration, respect, prayers for their families and the solemn promise to NEVER forget the debt we can never pay...

God Bless the families of the Fallen Hero's

Linda - I want to add that I watched a program on the History Channel and I was surprised to learn of how many civilians were killed in the making of weapons during WWII.  They weren't soldiers but I do feel they also deserve our thoughts, at the time we couldn't make enough bullets, bombs, guns, etc. for our soldiers and they died trying.

Linda - How nice to see you back.  Nice of Tchaka to highlight this as well.  He's got a point about Americans (and our allies) during WWII.  EVERYONE was making a sacrifice.  I am afraid it is only the military doing it now along with their families, and too heavily weighted with Americans.  Where is the rest of the world?  Where are the rest of us making a sacrifice?  How about a little "war tax" to pay for all this?  I would be happy to pay that as long as I know where it is going.

Memorial Day will always be "Decoration Day" or "Memorial Day" to me.  Not BarBQ day.
