REALTOR vs. Real Estate Agent

I just read a post written by Debra Walsh entitled You Did What??  You Will Never Show One of My Listings!!  And that got me thinking about the reasons of why abiding by a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practices is so important.  This board holds us accountable.  We are held to a high ethics code which includes competency, fairness and high integrity.  If other agents, buyers or sellers have a complaint, there is a board that will review the complaint and disciplinary action can be taken against that Realtor.  This isn't true of a real estate agent,  If the agent does something, like in Debra's blog, leave a potential buyer alone in a home listed for sale, there is no disciplinary board to review the complaint.

As REALTORS not only do we strive to protect the rights of homeowners, we make a difference in our communities.    And as an association and group we are able to accomplish things pertaining to real estate that we could certainly not do on own own.  We are informed of legislation that may be a detriment to homeowners and through the National Association of REALTORS are able, though our dues, lobby against this type of legislation.Realtor.org logo

I am proud to be a REALTOR.  I am proud for what being a REALTOR stands for.  And when you are thinking of buying or selling real estate, make sure your agent is a REALTOR.  Not only for the standards of Practice that they follow, but for your protection!

dawn,

That's interesting. In Ontario, real estate agents follow a strict Code of Ethics which is incorporated into the regulatory statute. In some respects it is stricter than the Realtors Code.

Brian ~ there is no governing board over real estate agents to file a complaint for other agents or  buyers and sellers.

Dawn, while that is true, a phone call to the Broker would be in line.  Preferably by the non-offending agents Broker.   For if you don't have your Broker behind you...you will get nowhere fast.

Dawn....Realtors® are held to the standard of the Code of Ethics.  Although I agree with William that a call to the agent's Broker by the listing Broker would be the thing to do.

Great post.  I am proud to be a Realtor too!  Several times a month, I have had to call the manager of the agent in question...  Sometimes it helps them learn, sometimes it goes in one ear and out the other of that manager...

Bill and Carra ~ we have humdreds of agents that own their own company and are their own broker.  In this instance, you don't get anywhere.  But for those that have a broker, that is the smart thing to do and what I do recommend.
