REALTOR vs. Real Estate Agent
I just read a post written by Debra Walsh entitled You Did What?? You Will Never Show One of My Listings!! And that got me thinking about the reasons of why abiding by a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practices is so important. This board holds us accountable. We are held to a high ethics code which includes competency, fairness and high integrity. If other agents, buyers or sellers have a complaint, there is a board that will review the complaint and disciplinary action can be taken against that Realtor. This isn't true of a real estate agent, If the agent does something, like in Debra's blog, leave a potential buyer alone in a home listed for sale, there is no disciplinary board to review the complaint.
As REALTORS not only do we strive to protect the rights of homeowners, we make a difference in our communities. And as an association and group we are able to accomplish things pertaining to real estate that we could certainly not do on own own. We are informed of legislation that may be a detriment to homeowners and through the National Association of REALTORS are able, though our dues, lobby against this type of legislation.
I am proud to be a REALTOR. I am proud for what being a REALTOR stands for. And when you are thinking of buying or selling real estate, make sure your agent is a REALTOR. Not only for the standards of Practice that they follow, but for your protection!
