8 Traits You should Have for a Long Real Estate Career

Over the many years that I have been in RE  in Chapel Hill I have seen an incredible number of agents come and go. Susprisingly twenty agents in the CBHPW Chapel Hill office have been with the company for 10 years or more.
What traits do you think set these agents apart and keep them going year after year in a very difficult business?
Last week I discovered some answers.

Thursday morning CBHPW had a  breakfast for agents who have been with the company for 10 years or more.
I didn't want to miss this event because it was honoring friends who were with the company when I started 11 years ago and have always been there for me.  Four agents in our office    had anniversary milestones that were celebrated at the breakfast - Linda Boucher 15 years and  Debbie Saleeby, Tommy Watts and Cotten Tyler, have been with the company for25 years

The HPW marketing Department put together videos from friends of the 25 year honorees, stories that that were both funny and human. We heard about Tommy Watts chaining his real estate signs to the yard and his persistence in tracking down the sign thief.  Friends talked about Tommy knowing everything about the history of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, especially as it pertains to real estate and development showing that Tommy has persistence and exceptional knowledge.
Debbie Saleeby was described as the nicest person in the office, always ready to help and share her experience. Gary, Debbies husband, described Debbie in addition to that, as being very determined and clear as to her goals.

And Cotten Tyler, well Cotten is is a clown, and does lighten things up around the office. He is a great go to person for questions about land transactions. We also saw from his friends and wife in the video that he truly cares about people especially scouting and children. One young fan even wrote a sweet letter and told him he he smells just like a jelly sandwich.

I learned that the some of the traits to have for a long real estate career include persistence, knowledge, helpfulness, determination, clear goals, a sense of humor, caring about others and a good jelly smell.
I guess another question to ask would be what traits do agents who don't stick with the business have. What do you think?

Marianne, It takes the same characteristics to be a long-term loan officer.......not sure about the smell of jelly though :)    Oh, by the way, I have a daughter who is a rising Senior at UNC !!!

Hello Julia, Where are you in NC? I hope you get to visit your daughter often. Isn't it something that people can be so different but still have those characteristics in common?  The jelly smell might not be a common trait but it is the little pleasing quirks that add to the basics and make us who we are.
