I've been suffering from writer's block of sorts lately.  Just can't drag the muse out of her funk, and no amount of trolling the net for ideas helps to string a few words together for a blog.  Heck, I can't find enough words for my FB Status update.  When I can't write - I read, and I've been reading an awful lot in the Rain lately.

With members calling the shots on features - I've been reading the dashboard again, and not just those I subscribe to.

I wonder how much consideration went into clicking that suggest button on some of the featured posts.  I wonder if the promise of the purple star to add to one's collection of coveted icons is to blame for some lousy posts sporting a gold star where so many worthy ones go unnoticed.

There is a post of Jon Zolsky's that has more life in each of its long-winded sentences than a dozen or so how-to and how-not-to posts occupying the front page of this network.  And then there is this gem - the self-important "I am too busy to have a conversation" post that not only got featured, but generated over a hundred mostly in agreement comments.  The premise, in a nutshell - we ought to take our clues from Twitter when commenting on blogs and try to keep our conversations here to some marginal number of words, paragraphs or pixels.

Jay Thompson chose to remove all his posts from this network when his Rainmaker status was yanked for lack of contributions (as defined by the new must write a post every 60 or 90 days or whatever that number actually is).  I would take one of Jay's comments over the majority of these new-er posters' blogs, but who am I to judge.  So I won't.

I hope that AR considers this here blog as fulfilling the must post something every-so-often-requirement.  I hope that when everyone recovers from their intellectual slumber, we can restore a bit of charm this network used to hold for some of us: where big words were not avoided at all cost, where members did not advise bloggers on necessity for clipart to make their long-winded posts readable, where people could still read a post that lacked in decoration beyond the one that mattered, having something to say and the ability to say it well.

I am sad to see many of the best bloggers on here take their content elsewhere, and be replaced by a collection of self-appointed gurus with ADD.  If AR sheeple must have their clipart and monosyllabics, does the staff HAVE to cater to the lowest common denominator?  Is the gold star and front page placement no longer an endorsement, whether real or perceived?  Can someone with more authority than I please remind the gods and staff that there is a chance, albeit possibly a small one, that the attention span of consumers is a tad longer than of some featured bloggers, and that just maybe they are not looking for a fast-food diet of tweets-n-toons in a place they come to get to know people and places

Maybe finding a place to call home for at least some folks is a serious and emotional decision, and they come here looking to connect, looking for a bit of transparency.  For this here blogger/marketer/consumer - transparency demands a bit of heart and thoughtfulness.

I've yet to see that displayed in a 140 characters.

Oh, but Larry - there are no rules:-)  Hence, this here post directed at those who attempt to institute rules into an organic community.  Doesn't tend to work out too well in the end.

PS: I love love love all things shiny, potatoes or otherwise.  Truth be told though, i just don't have it in me to say 'great post, thanks for sharing'.

Best, and good to see you again.

Inna:

I also did not quite understand where that blogger was coming from when she was complaining about long comments. Any comments are welcomed on my blog, but particularly long ones.  They are a tribute to the fact that the person has actually read the post and has some thoughts.

Wow.  I missed out on all of this because it was not featured and I've had a really nutty week. I try really hard to read non-featured posts since I know the best ones don't always get the star.

I did not take such offense to Jamie's blog and agree that we should not write a tome on other people's blog, but definitely make it bigger than a twitter post.  twitter - yuk.   However,  after reading your dialog with her I can see the snarkiness in that original post.  It did seem just like a big or rather, small, rant - but sometimes that's all blogging is.

What I find remarkable here is the activity on your post, Inna, did not trigger a feature - definitely a better post than the one which inspired it.  I also can't believe someone would just delete their blog and AR profle and take their toys elsewhere - after being featured.  It seems like tensions are high on AR this week.  But I guess tensions are high in our industry right now.

Claudette - with the good majority of short and sweet stuff one sees on features occupying the home page - reading the post is not even necessary.  They do so often seem cut and paste, and i find it disrespectful to the blogger to leave a comment of that nature.  I often read stuff i have nothing new to contribute to and walk away.  Of course I also don't ordinarily get my 250 daily commenting points either.  To each their own, as it should be.  Just sucks that certain behaviours are rewarded over and above others.

Coral - I am not surprised this wasn't featured, but I am surprised that people are still finding it.  Thank you for the compliments, nontheless.  As for deleting the post and account - in her line of business, she may have simply decided that it's bad pr to leave it as is.  I wouldn't have done it - but again, to each their own.  I think the hazing, if you will, was well deserved, and at the end of the day the majority of the people agreed with her view point.

I've ranted on this space about all sorts of things, big and small, including this ditty.  Folks agreed or disagreed.  I always enjoyed the resulting conversation.  If we are ever able to effectively converse in a 140 characters or less, for the sake of economy of time, i wonder what the depth of sentiment will be reduced it, and if it will be proportionate to that word/character/pixel limit.

Thank you for your comments!

Inna,

The post to which you referred of your Dad's is an example of my book-writing that I do here too (okay, maybe it's a chapter, not a book)!  I always assumed that it was likely annoying to the readers but, not the writers of the post themselves.  Some days I just can't help myself though.

The post that you brought to our attention must have been bashing the likes of the writers--and those are the ones that I love receiving.  They put thoughts and hearts into their comments--not just a 'great post, thanks for sharing!'  (I think that post was removed BTW.  I guess he received too much heat about it!)

I started out here for business but, have stayed because of the camaraderie.  And, look!   I found an awesome graphic artist here as a wonderful bonus!

Debe - sorry I somehow missed this yesterday.  I, too, welcome the abovementioned fantastic bloggers' comments on my posts any time, whether long or short.  At least I know that they have read the post prior to commenting.

The post this one was addressing was infact removed by the author.  I guess she did not anticipate any dissent, considering the bulk of the comments were in agreement with the sentiments she voiced, but to each their own, truly.

At the end of the day, the dozen or so people I met here that I care about is what keeps me interested.  Occasionally, I make a new worthy discovery.  Other than that - there is life, work, the ocean - all much more encompassing that a virtual population of professionals of one kind or another.

Making Connections to Success in Real Estate

Hi Inna, I've been MIA recently due to an abundance of real estate work.  Imagine that...  but seriously not sure if it's me today or what but there is such dissension going on that it's messing with my psyche!  I love reading your posts, and sometimes (I'm guilty) I'll have time to leave a thoughtful post and other times it's just a quickie more left to say I'm thinking about you.  In any event, I'm one that's glad you're here.

Lee & Pamela - mia due to business is always a good thing:-)  Quickies from you are ok, so no worries.  This was really more about the whole larger picture thing.  It's even ok to agree with me sometimes.  I am glad you are here as well, btw:-)

Hi Inna...sorry I missed this post earlier, great post.

Should it have been a Feature post?...well in the Past....Not !!, not enough white space and little graphic, today...mmm I think so, but to late now :O((

Keep writting...:O))

PS: You never in and spanked me for supporting AR with the Newbies armchairs where jumping all over Jon and AR and then me and other oldies for changing the State Page with nowhere to go instantly to find their points standing...aw.

It was tense for a while.

I have to agree with Dan and disagree with Jonathan. However, if you can post some doom and gloom, and the doomier and gloomier the better, you can often get a Featured Post. And if you're an old timer here, and like to yell your doom and gloom, ActiveRain loves you! The rest of us have to just keep on keeping on and blog for our prospective Clients rather than for other ActiveRain members.

P.S. Apparently the person who wrote the self-important "I'm too busy to have a conversation" post has deleted it. I recently deleted a post and all its comments, too, because Jonathan (see comment #31) was upset with it and apparently didn't understand sarcasm and reverse psychology which, I admit, is sometimes difficult to use in writing, so I failed there with at least one person, him.

Oh WOW … think I stumbled (via a nudging from Pamela) onto kindred spirits here with this post …. I was beginning to think active rain blogging was not for me … the non-conformist that I have always been … that active rain was like living in a new HOA where I have to get permission to back my car into the driveway instead of pulling in forwards like everyone else. As someone just described me as a "newbie" (love that word … it's so discriminating) in a comment responding to my rhetoric comment (kept it non rhetoric to the 3 sec rule, above the fold rule) about a recent blog post about rules and white space, and graphics, and on and on with the HOA syndrome …. Thank you Inna and all your commenters …. I feel relieved … I may stick around …. now that I "may" not be hauled off to active rain prison …..... her post was "Wall to Wall is for Floors, Not Blogs" I'm sure she hasn't read it yet … since my comment hasn't been deleted. Thank you …. great writers here … and thinkers! …. now for the "what does the graphic say" bit ... it says "wampee" look that one up!

Missed these last few comments here, so my apologies for the belated:

Fred - I've been off AR lately, just too much work, so i missed the State Pages kerfuffle in its entirety. As for features- I am a flight risk, if you will:-)

Jim  - That person sadly did remove her blog and her entire profile, but she continued the conversation for a while on her own personal blog.  I am not intrigued enough at the moment to go find it though.:-) Thanks for your comment.  As for your posts being nudged by the powers that be into removal - that's unfortunate.  I figure it's always better to just let stuff stand and have a conversation.  Agree, disagree or whatever floats our respective boats on any given day - but if you want to censor stuff, it's more inline with standard blogging ettiquette to just move on and use a next button.

Rick - there are lots of fascinating reads amongst this group of merry misfits, much better than anything i could pen.  You want to not just stick around, but find your way around to Paul Slaybaugh, Andrew Lenza, Tanya Nouwens, Michelle Viggiano, Susan, Lisa et al.  :-)  Good to meet you, and welcome.

Inna,

It's Kim's fault that I am here, so I am going to space frequently, because if I evah grow up, I want to be more like her... well, without the operation.

I always thought that AR was indeed a community, and as such, one made friends and had good times, like reading through these comments and your post.

Many of my all time faves are those completely self serving posts...like... Hi Inna, I feel that a well turned phrase is often the source of me being an absolute top producing agent that clients would gladly throw themselves in front of a BUICK for...

oops forgot to take up rooom. Like I said, it's Kim's fault. Sorry...must dash...my time is just so freakin' valuable.

Should we ask  them to put a "shun" button up?

Bill - anyone who's Kim's fault is welcome on my blog:-)  That said, it is still a community, but the majority dictates the direction the community spirit flows towards.  Some of us are now outcasts of sorts, but then again, some of us have always been a bit on a non-conformist side of things.  i would very much like the 'shun' button.  It would certainly make things a bit more interesting.

Hello Inna,

Slow rainy day here...I have been catching up from a well deserved vacation to find your post, the original post, and subsequent comments.  Great reading!

You once commented to me about being laconic (before the 140 character rule) which you clearly identified correctly.  I have always said "Why use Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, when blah works?" I think I may have referred to you as being sharp or edgy??   Some of your new friends might be calling you something else.  I like sharp and edgy!

So in the interest of the 3 paragraph and 140 character rule I will keep this brief...My vacation was not long enough.  This may be my lengthiest comment to date (should it be a blog?) Keep writing, my friend!!

Hi Dick! Good to see you and your long-ish response.  There are no rules on my posts, as you know, less those ickie "thanks for sharing" cut and paste jobs.  I hate those.  Everything else is welcome.

:-)

Welcome back!

Lovely - I know all about blackballing.  In retrospect, not being featured is kind of cool - saves me the trouble of finding new and inventive ways of responding to "nice post, thanks for sharing" sorts of comments.  :-)
