Let's be careful out there!

Welcome to beautiful Wrightsville Beach, NC!  We're glad you're here and we hope that you'll be back.  Again and again.

To that end, please be careful when you are swimming in the ocean.  We've had a spateWrightsville Beach NC surf of very strong rip currents lately and they are predicting they will be much worse by the end of the week due to Hurricane Earl.

You can track Earl here.  It's too early to know what impact he will have on our shores, he is expected to narrowly miss us.  But we will still have to deal with some rough surf and rip currents.

Should you find yourself in a rip current please heed these tips:

  • Remain calm
  • Don't fight against the current
  • Swim out of the current in a direction following the the shoreline
  • Once out of the current swim at an angle away from the rip current towards the shore

I'm not trying to scare anyone, and I'm not telling you not to swim.  Just be careful.  Pay attention to the lifeguards and their directions.

And please, never swim alone.  Even when the waters are calm it's always best to have a buddy along.  Not only is it more fun, it's safer.

Enjoy your stay in Wrightsville Beach, NC.  And please, come back soon!

Tish, Great advice!  The water can be deceptive, and quite powerful if you don't know how to treat it with respect!

Liz & Bill:  Beautiful and very formidable.

Scott:  Thanks, the storm tracker is a staple for us.

Lisa:  Thank you -- it is always such a shock to people who actually encounter a rip current, even a mild one.  Those red flags are posted for a very good reason and it's important everyone heed their meaning.

Stay safe, Tish!  I hear the currents are going to be potentially be wicked this weekend!  This is VERY timely advice so thanks for putting it out there - we all need to be reminded to take caution even NOT in the face of bad weather at the coast!

Mary Kay:  Earl and I are not speaking, so I'm hoping he'll give me a wide berth!  Thanks.

Leesa:  Thanks -- would really hope everyone takes heed this coming weekend, especially since it is the last official hurray of the season.

Tish, I love the see but California's coast is hazardous to swim in. We have huge undertow and people drown on our coastline. Thanks for a great article. I'll reblog to my market!

Honestly, I have been having issues with strong currents... I prefer staying in the water when its actually calm..and still! But your tips are great. I do hope to use them without fear!

Melissa:  Thanks, while we all love a good storm at the beach from time-to-time, we don't want anything destructive.

Janean: I know our coast is a bit calmer, but there are still forces to behold.  Thanks for the re-blog!

Karen:  We're hoping to get just a wave from Earl!

Will:  Whoo-Hooo -- glad to see you back.  By all means, enjoy the water, just be extra aware right now.
