Clients constantly ask me about how the house will show without furniture.  My answer is usually the same, it always shows worse without the furniture (unless the furniture is really bad, and I have had some that showed better without the furniture).Paint Cans

The problem is that that every blemish and problem shows up when the furniture is removed.  Every scuff, every mark on the walls makes the house show worn and dingy.

Washing the walls before painting may make the home show much better.  The trick is to get everything to blend.  Here is a great tip,

  1. Before washing wrap a strip of terry cloth around your wrists with rubber bands to keep drips from running up or down (depending on your perspective) your arms.
  2. Move all the furniture to the center of the room.
  3. Cover any picture hooks or nails with a piece of kitchen sponge to keep your knuckles from bleeding
  4. Cover the floor with an old bed sheet or a paint drop cloth.
  5. Make up a mixture of 1/4 cup of washing soda (in the laundry aisle of your supermarket), 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1/2 cup of amonia to a gallon of water to create a wall cleaning solution.
  6. Remove crayon marks usint a lubricating oil and paper towels.  Use a toothbrush and the oil and finish by wiping the wall with dishwashing liquid and a damp cloth.
  7. Scuff Marks can be cleaned with a dry gum eraser like Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.  For difficult marks add baking soda to the damp cloth and work it in.
  8. Use a natural sponge to wash the walls and work from the bottom of the wall up, making sure the solution is clean.  Clean the entire wall so that it all blends together and does not leave any wash marks.

If all else fails, call a great painter and invest in painting the room  Paint is worth $20 the bucket and $1000 on the walls.  A house is a big asset and it needs to look great to get top dollar.

Hi Mary,  These are some really good tips.  Houses always show better when they're clean and freshly painted.  Great ideas!
