A Rag-Top Day in Ocean City, New Jersey

It started after my appointment at the Re-Hab Center at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point ... just nice enough to put the top down for the ride back to Ocean City (NJ).  It's a "rag-top day" as the Jimmy Buffett song goes.

I drove home stopping off at the real estate office to tell them I would be a bit late due to traffic backed up on Route #52 and the work to complete the 6-7 year project.  I took an outdoor shower ... not too many days left when you will be showering outside.

I went to work from about 9:30 AM to 1PM parking in my usual spot ... the small space which can only be used by very small cars in front of the office.  Having the smallest car, I claimed that space a few years ago.  It's perfect for a VW Convertable.  I spent the rest of the day on real estate errands going out to Mamora (over the 34th Street Bridge) and around town.

My VW is not only a great car to drive around town during the busy summer traffic; it is also perfect for being recognized and remembered.  Even when I just park the car in my little spot, everyone passing knows I'm on the job.  It is a highly recognizable car ... the technical color is "moonbeam - a white with a black top.  During the summer I usually drive around with the top up but the windows all down ... simply too hot and sunny for the top down.  But the spring and the fall are the top-down days.  Perfect weather even if it gets a bit cool ... you can put up the windows or turn on the heat.

A bit of personal history ... back in the early 70s, when my wife, Leslie, and I were teaching school, we spent an entire summer, about 90 days, running around Europe without any iternery.  We even took a graduate course from Penn State on European History before we left.  So I purchased a 1970 VW Convertable that we picked up at the factory in Germany.  We flew into Amsterdam, took a train to the factory in Onusbreck (Germany) where the convertibles were made, drove the car all over Europe (about 5,000 miles), parked the car in Paris, flew over to London for a week, back to Paris, drove back to Amsterdam to end our summer.  An exceptional opportunity and experience!!!

So when the VWs were being made again, I told Leslie I wanted one (I didn't need one), and we had three cars for quite a bit of time.  We only have 35,000 miles on our 7-year old VW so although an old car, it is quite young in mileage.  I garaged the car for about the first four years during the winter months.  So that's our story about "a rag-top day" in Ocean City, New Jersey                               dap
