Deb's DreamIn March this year, my little darling (and he hates it when I refer to him as "my little darling" -- HA HA HA) started to work for PUB QUIZ USA.  I posted about it PUB QUIZ USA

Carlson has been going to Hood River every Wednesday evening, a two-hour drive (roundtrip), to host a pub quiz.  I go along for the ride, literally.  It's a GORGEOUS drive.

This past Wednesday, Deb -- a bartender -- told him something about her dreams.  An amazing story.  He asked her to email him, and with permission here is Deb's email as written:

"Carlson,(please do not disclose my last name)

I am Deb,just a bartender/crepe maker at the Passport Cafe/Horse & Hound British Pub in Hood River and are very excited to share this news with your blog readers!Every wednesday we have pubquiz and have for many years now and thanks to everybody coming in regularly (and tipping as they do) my 1942 cedar cabin right by the beach in Ocean City,Wa is paid off this month!!! That is only part of the news, once we finish renovation(which will be accelerated moreso once there will be NO MORE mortgage payments!) in a couple years-I hope(thanks in part to volunteers and I owe a lot to my electrical engineer/woodworker "jack of all trades" fiance,Greg)the cabin will become "Longacre Beach Retreat", a place for cancer patients and their families to stay (free of charge to them) to make memories with them and/or defer the costs of hotel/motel stays to be close to the treatment center or hospital to support their loved one in their time of need. This endeavor will be a non-profit supported by the medical staff from cancer hospitals around Seattle who will rent the cabin as "Longacre at Ocean City" to enjoy with their families knowing that "X" number of nights will be provided to cancer patients thanks to their paid stay! They will also be my "eye's" referring patients in need to me & I will "pencil them in" a reservation to enjoy a "break" from their treatments and enjoy the healing that I feel only the beach can provide!!!!

I shop clearance sales and buy "mistake" paints(mis-tints) and buy new building supplies only when there is no alternative, utilizing very "green" renovation practices....in the end I am suspecting the whole project when complete will have only cost myself under sixty thousand dollars(the cabin & more than an acre of wooded land, I aquired for under thirty grand) including interest and the full renovation. Thanks for listening to my excited ramblings(there is a pic of the cabin below),DEB-The British Pub/Longacre Beach Retreat(Ocean City,Wa.)"

I've met Deb.  She's a nice lady, and we had no idea that she was working on her dreams!

It makes the 2-hour drive seem worth it!

Deb has a heart o' gold.  And I'm reminded of this passage:  "Blessed are the meek" . . .

Hi Robert . . . a nice plan, and it made my little darling son feel a part of the project.  People like him as their host, and he draws a very good, loyal crowd each Wednesday.  It helps . . .

Hey Nevin -- we had no idea Deb was dedicating herself to this.  I admire people who do a lot, with a little!!  Good efforts can go a long way!!

In my last life before real estate, I was a Journeyman Carpenter and during the 70's helped various friends who were going "back to the land" in different places build  their own hand-made houses. Some of those folks are still living and thriving in Colorado, Texas, Arkansas and other places.

i ahd the greta fortune to run with a team in the Hood To Coast several years back and marveled at the incredible beauty I saw between Mt. Hood and Seaside on the coast. What a perfect place fro a home like you've described and what the fact that they are expressing gratitude by sharing with others who are really in need is such a great story. Thank you for sharing!

Carla---Talk about unselfish! Here is a woman who puts others before herself. To top it off, she has kept it a secret until now---not expecting any credit for her good deeds. The world needs more people like Deb! Thanks for sharing this heartwarming story!!

Carla, I completely understand, when asked about the race, I describe it as a cross between Woodstock and D-Day in some of the most beautiful country in the world!

Hi Russell -- That's is the funniest description of Hood to Coast -- funny 'cause it's TRUE!!  Thanks!!

Hey Carra . . . And Deb recognizes this is a work-in-progress, but she's ready to put it in place.  First step, mortgage paid!!

Deb

Thanks everyone for the great words of encouragement! I have always wanted a place at the coast and staked out the market since I was a teenager until I found one I could realistically afford...the project came about because I have tried being a landlady before and do NOT want to do it again. I would rather share my place with people who would most likely be more like stewards of my land than potential "partiers" renting for the night off the street. Having folks in and out of the cabin frequently will keep it less vulnerable to break-ins/vandalism and the like. Having taken care of my childs father until he passed away at a cancer center in Seattle, I felt this is a need that I could fill. My motto is " I cannot cure cancer, but I will do what I CAN to help those who have to deal with it" and what I CAN do is renovate my little cabin(with much more motivation than if it were just for myself as I stay there now and could leave it like it is and move at even a slower pace without the urgency I feel because of this purpose) and share it with those who are affected and hopefully help them find peace at my little piece of the beach. Thanks again! We will be able to throw more money at it now the mortgage is no more....time is the only other thing I could use more of but I will keep going at it until the renovation is complete!!!!DEB-Longacre Beach Retreat(Ocean City,WA)
