365 Things To Do In Southern NM: Day 23 - Golf in Las Cruces

When it comes to perfect golf weather, Las Cruces is the place.  We have four golf courses in town and each one is quite different to play.

Las Cruces New Mexico golf courses

Sonoma Ranch

Sonoma Ranch is the 'newest' of the golf courses in Las Cruces.  Located on the east side of town, this course is very highly rated - holding a 3 1/2 star rating out of 4 stars on the Best Places to Play list.  It was designed by Cal Olson.  It has its challenges - rolling hills, sand traps that appear out of nowhere and greens that will make you scratch your head. From the championship tees, the course is 7,082 yards.

NMSU Golf Course

The New Mexico State University golf course is home to our womens and mens golf teams.  You'll find a beautiful and challenging 18 hole course situated just in front of "A" Mountain, just east of campus.  It's a very popular course among locals so grabbing a tee time is the best way to go.  If you aren't in the mood for 18 holes, you can practice on the short game course.

Las Cruces Country Club

This course is the oldest in town.  It was built in 1928 as a 6 hole course.  It reached a full 18 holes in 1953. It is located near the intersection of Highway 70/Main Street and Interstate 25.

LCCC is a semi-private club, best described as an 'old school club'.  Memberships are available and there are different levels - full golf, full swimming, combination of both.

Picacho Hills Country Club

Picacho Hills CC is on the west side of Las Cruces and the views from this course are amazing.  Built in the early 70's, this course plays to 6880 yards from the championship tees.  Tee times are a good way to go here - you can get on the course as early as 7am Tuesday through Sunday.  They are open on select Mondays so if that's the only day you can play, call ahead to the pro shop to see what Mondays they're open.

White Sands Missile Range Golf Course

The White Sands golf course is a 9 hole course and is open to the public located on the southern part of the main post.  I've play the course a few times and it's a nice little course.  Remember, if you are not associated with the military, you will need to have your driver's license, registration and insurance to gain access to the post.

A Few Tips:

When you play golf in the beautiful southwest, remember that desert critters - coyotes, snakes, tarantulas and other 'friendlies' - are just a few feet away in the rough.   If you happen to hit your ball out of bounds, the best thing to do is say good bye and hit a mulligan - especially in the warmer months.

Most hotels in the area offer "Play and Stay" packages so, when you are planning your visit to Las Cruces, ask the hotel about these offers.

So many Golf Courses, so little time!  I guess I had better golf well and stay out of the rough!  Great localism post, Emmary!
