Rotary Club of Villa Park Newsletter Holiday Greetings Club Assembly Report
Sr. Pastor Stan Van den Berg opened our meeting with holiday blessings for Hanukkah and Christmas. Steve Stern led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Bryan Nash led the Rotary Four Way Test. Our song was The Dreidel Song.

Announcements: Greg Mills announced that there is a German Student who will be coming to Villa Park High School for the second semester. She is a junior and is a member of Interact back in Germany. Volunteers are needed to host her during her stay in Villa Park. Please contact Greg if you wish to provide housing. Steven Pollack reminded us that the Villa Park Boat Parade is this Sunday, December 12th. We will be cooking our usual holiday treats just across from the Villa Park City Hall(our usual location). Set up begins at 4-4:30 and volunteers are needed for set-up, cooking and clean-up. Contact Steve if you can lend a hand otherwise you can just show up; its always lots of fun and the food is great!! Pam Dunn reminded us that tonight is the By Invitation Only event in Tustin. The fun begins around 5PM and goes till 9PM. Bring your family, friends and neighbors. 20% of the total sales come back to the club. They'll be appetizers and wine.
Happy Bucks: Teri Brooks was happy that she's been doing very well on her gemology tests. She was also honored by the Villa Park Spartan Football Team for her years of service to the team as Pizza Mom. Mark Schmidt- brought in a banner from the Villa Park, Illinois Rotary Club. Greg Mills got to brag about daughter Abby, whose soccer team won league and a recent tournament. Pam Dunn recounted how exchange student Agatha Fernandez, who is visiting from France, thanked a Medal Of Honor recipient from World War II for helping to liberate France from the Germans. This occurred while Agatha accompanied the Marines on Thanksgiving to a local motorcycle museum. Agatha is staying the home of Rotarian Mark & Jan Schmidt. Tom Gundy was happy his nephew who just returned from Afghanistan came home safely. Bob Bell had a pleasant conversation with someone from the gas company when his heater died. The young repairman thanked Bob for helping him stay employed. The heater was expertly repaired without problems. Bob was touched by the gratitude expressed by this young man. Bob Kreisberg was happy to report that his son Jason, a PhD living in Singapore has developed a new process that will help drugs combat bacteria in hospitals. This is the culmination of 3 years of research, the results were recently presented at a symposia in Australia. A patent is pending. Jim Brodsky was happy to see his grandson, James Brodsky who plays catcher on his baseball team, win a baseball tournament. Bob Meyer needs help!! He is about to receive a truckload of DVDs and needs help packing them up to send to the troops. Date: December 16th Place: Orange Unified School Offices on Handy and Katella. Time: 10-2 PM. New Generation Committee Report: Lisa Stepanski- chair Interact- $600 budgeted for 2nd Annual Interact Recognition Dinner- recognizing the leaders of Villa Park and Lutheran High Interact RYLA- $1400 budgeted to send 3 high school juniors to Camp RYLA Rotaract- No budget, no current plans Youth Exchange- There will be a student from Germany visiting the area during the spring semester at Villa Park High. Housing is being sought. The club will look into sponsoring activities , dinners, etc. during her stay.
Vocational Service Committee Report: Linda Bartrom-Olsen- Chair Budgeted Items: Grants for AP Exams for needy students- $860 Future Business Leaders of America- 10 entry fees to national competition- $340 Interact Pennies for Prevention raised $2000 - a club visit is planned next week. Science Olympiad- $700 Future Scientist and Engineers- $900 Song Competition- $300- Feb 3rd Speech Competition- FEb 10th - $300 Teacher Minigrants- $3100
Club Service Committee Report: Craig Beinlich- Chair Membership Agenda: Pete Moriarty -Chair Retention New Prospects 5 for 1 Plan Induction Fireside Chats- last was on Nov. 17th attended by 11 prospects, members, and new members Foundation - Nagy Ibrahim- Chair 2 new 355 Club members Jane and Bill McDonald received Paul Harris Awards. Tree Farm- Craig and Paul Hudson Work continues on updating the irrigation system. Badges/Pins Let Craig know if you need new badges, etc. Holiday Party- Jan 13th- more to follow- outdoor heaters are needed Demotion Party- June 30th
Community Service Report: Jill Kuli- Chair
The Committee has focused on Hands on Projects- - John Broussard has done an excellent job with the dinners at the Ronald McDonald House - Shred Day was a major success and brought in over $600 in donations which all go toward supporting our Ronald McDonald Dinners. Jill thanked Mariane Koepnick for her support. - EWaste Drive resulted in 40,000 pounds of waste- some monies may be coming from that. - Book Drive at Orange County Fair - Marine Thanksgiving- we raised over $2000 at our fund raiser to help support the effort by Rick Barnett. - We also assisted Bob Meyer with his Mail Train for the troops. Jill encouraged everyone to bring in gently used DVDs to send to the troops- $200 has been budgeted for postage. - Project Hope School- Ice cream Fridays are planned. The current facility does not have a kitchen. Jill will also get books from the Scholastic Book Warehouse for the school. - $1000 has been budget for school or community projects so let Jill know if something worthy comes up. - Steve Stern has been involved in a beautification project, where homes that need some TLC can get a little help from volunteer Rotarians. Other Activities: - Camp to Belong- Jill foresees more hands on events to help make this project grow. -Scholarships for Interact Kids-given to Interact Leaders -Above and Beyond Award - for a nonrotarian who goes out of his way to serve the community - Grad Night Scholarship- helps support the Grad Night at VPHS - Support for Beverly House- a home for women who have aged out of the Foster Care System Jill plans to supply purses and cosmetics
International Service Committee Report: Jane McDonald- Chair Jane reported on International Committee Accomplishments this year: -$2000 for backpacks to go to orphans in Tecate, Mexico. - $1000 to support Operation A Bit of Home for overseas troops- via Bob Meyer - Matching grant with Monarch Beach Club to build a playground in Columbia for local children -Donated odds and ends to the Navajo Indian Children- school supplies, etc. $5000 remains in Budget- $3000 was going to be used for a matching grant for a water project in Uganda but the grant was not approved Alex Moro has reported that there are poor children in Tecate in need of food and some of the money may be used for that purpose.
Treasurers Report: Milt Stamos Milt reported that we have 3 bank accounts with a total of over $68,000. $25,000 of which is a reserve fund. The Fall Festival Net Income= $27,000 We raised $2,250 at the event to help support the Marine Thanksgiving Program- total cost of the program was in excess of $15,000 the remainder was donated by Villa Park residents.
This year's budget was $53,872 and we have only spent $17,000 so far.
President Greg Mills thanked all the committee chairs for the work they have done so far and for their presentations.
Upcoming Events: This Sunday 4:30 Villa Park Boat Parade- set up and food preparation across from the Villa Park City Hall. Stop by and say hi if you don't have time to help.
