I am Guru, you're a Guru - everybody is a freaking Guru...

In the old days, when something didn't feel quite right, we went out and bought stuff, whether we needed it or not.  Or we got a cute puppy or a kitty, or kissed someone, or read a great book with a glass of nice wine to accompany the flow of words.  At the end of the shopping spree or a journey into some obscure novel, we recovered our wits and plunged right along  whatever path we’ve chosen or one that was chosen for us for our lack of ambition or courage.

Magically, the world stayed largely intact, and thriving, in parts due to the fact that there were many different kinds of people doing their various important tasks, and save for a few moments of self-doubt, there was a purpose of sorts, making it ok to wake up in the morning…and not find yourself the only non-billionaire/entrepreneur/successful business owner/_______________

snake oil social media marketing

For weeks now upon opening my Inbox, I am forced to surf through the various offerings that have nothing to do with puppies or kittens, or a good book (those I’d be ok with), but all preach some self-improvement mantra, most through Social Media.  I recall the days when sales folk who pitched their various pyramid schemes were frowned upon by those who could still think for themselves, and so the number of soon-to-be-billionaires via HerbaLife or some such remained relatively small.  The influx of Social Media gurus and SEO Gurus and Blogging for dollars gurus and the ease with which so many seem to jump on the bandwagon make it appear that that healthy cynicism with which business decisions ought to be evaluated is just gone.

It’s as if every used to sell Kirbys door-to-door entrepreneur seized on the next great pyramid scheme and they are doing their darndest to stay at the top, only the pyramid is now entirely virtual.  Where it was in the past about performance that hinged on sales of a particular product or service, now it seems to be all about acquisition of virtual accolades and followers.  And so, for the sake of examples, I have a company locally, one of the founders of which boasts 22k followers on Twitter.  Their main business is a brick and mortar sort, and a business to business one at that.  With the total population here being just slightly over 60K, I highly doubt that 22K of them are in need or ever will be of the services of this particular guru.  But I digress.

It pains me that so many jump in head first and spend serious money on the next big shiny thing, without doing due diligence.  For some reason it seems to be especially true in real estate.  It takes absolutely nothing to call yourself a guru on any subject, so long as the results of what you sell are just as virtual as the means by which you sell them.  So next time you find yourself getting sucked into a social guru sales pitch – do some research into their credentials.  As has been pointed out in many, many experiments, the number of followers is NOT a credential.  There are few legitimate social media gurus in the world, or any other gurus, for that matter.  They are the ones whose ideas are worth listening to, and you’ll be more likely to find them on TED than facebook, or twitter, or AR.  The rest of us navigate these waters blindly, just like most of the self-made gurus, and hope for the best.  And that, in the end, is how it should be.  Because having a facebook page will not FIX your business any more than having 22K followers on Twitter will.  Nor will it help you control the narrative of your unique business offering and niche any more than playing Farmville will make your actual garden grow stuff.

So, for god’s sake – take care of your name and reputation or that of your company.  When you entrust someone with that name and reputation, make sure you know that they are fully qualified to treat it with the utmost diligence, skill and respect.  Contrary to the pitches, social media is NOT a numbers game.  It’s a relationships game, and, in my opinion, no one but you should be building and maintaining YOUR relationships.  Of course if you need technical help and help making your relationship building endeavors look good, hire a professional.  Doesn’t have to be us, but for the little bit you’ll spend on a pro FB page, vs one you can make on your own, your reputation will thank you.

What are your thoughts?

I love the first paragraph of this.  I do all of those things.  And if someone isn't here to kiss, I kiss the puppy or kitten while I am reading a good book, sipping wine.

Inna,

I sooooooo agree. I am amazed at the people who started off not even knowing what a blog was and now they are advertising themselves as Social Media experts.....My take...if they did not make it in their original occupation using these Social Media skills, then I will just plug along, using my own meager skills and see what happens.

However, if and when I see any productive means (cash), I will be calling you to make me more professionally social":)   I have looked at your designs and I think you have the means to make my image better.

Love that Facebook page.  This is excellent advice.  I wonder how many sales these poor people make with the calling the do.  They all sound so enthusiastic.  But to me they are like gnats circling around.  Just an annoyance.

Inna,

I agree entirely with your post. That should be true of any other mature and reasonably sentient reader of your blog.

Actually, I'm responding (after many months silence) because of what I suppose was a Freudian slip, "...to accompany the flaw of words."  A brilliant and succinct literary critique if I ever read one.  Bravo.

You had me at "in the old days,".

OK, I'm with Susan on how much I love the first paragraph, and with Michael on the intrinsic beauty of "...the flaw of words."  But you had me long time ago, and what you've written since is pure chocolate: makes me happy, good for the soul, and healthy in the strangest of ways :)

Inna, I am so tired of the calls. I am grateful Gmail catches most of the emails, most but not all. I have stopped reading everything I can get my hands on, I am now more discerning I suppose. They promise me the sun, the moon and the stars, they say they can guarantee 60 visitors in the first 2 months. Wow, how impressive... NOT.

I have learned a lot in the 2 years I have been blogging. I have learned that many will try and sell me something that never exsisted in the first place. I have learned Twitter is a waste of my time, I haven't opened Twitter in ages. I have a FB page for real estate, I have my blog going there, I have clients who follow me, so that is good, and I no longer play games on FB. How is that for a rundown?

Great post, as always.

Out of order here, folks, sorry.

Michael - I changed the flaw of words, flawed as they are, at the risk of confusing my AR audience:-)

But I do thank you for reading me and always getting me - it's nice to know that there are those who appreciate an occasional play:-)  PS: the Sunshine State is following in AZ's ill-lustrious footsteps with a nifty immigration law, as we speak, only ours is even more draconian.  I might do something on it, if the time allows...

Tanya, dahling - I am a chocoholic, so that's about as great a compliment as you could pay me:-)  xoxo

Jane - thanks for the compliments on the FB page.  As for the enthusiastic callers, I was probably more addressing the less-blatantly-enthusiastic writers here and elsewhere...  I don't get the sales calls from sm gurus or any others, so i am not privy to their products, tactics or amount of adrenaline flowing through their veins.  But the dishing out of "expert" advice on blogs - that I see all too often, sadly.

J. Philip - I've been meaning to say this for a while - just couldn't find the time to do it:-)  I won't friend anyone I don't know, and I don't care how bad for business it is.  If i don't recognize your face or your name, don't bother with the friend request on FB or a twitter invite, I won't be following.

Gary - The Kirby thing was really a thinly veiled metaphor for ex-real-estate agent or mortgage broker or anything else, for that matter.  Just sayin'  But yes, the rate of transformation is remarkable, something Kafka would have envied.

My Susan - that paragraph was penned with a mental pic of you:-)  xoxo

Andrea - as mentioned, this was more directed at the arena I hang in, which isn't calls or emails, but this blog space, FB etc.  But the premise still stands.  It is all too easy to fall into a trap, especially when it's rather skillfully set by a sales person.  It's just that in my experience, marketeers and sales people are not the same breed.  Those who fall for the newly-minted social media or other guru-ness tend to find themselves money and time poorer for their trouble.  I'd like to see less of that.

Hi Inna,

I sent you an email - but this needed to be said.... I've had all sorts of crazy people calling me for thngs with no evidence that it works.  If I'm stupid enough to answer - well I'm a Realtor - which = sitting duck....answering the phone is part of  what we do!   I usually get some kid on the phone who asks "Are you in front of your computer right now - I want to show you something."  Generally at that point I tell him that I'm not interested.  If they persist - I hang up.

Ruthmarie - hi, and I replied to your email:-)  Thanks for that, and all the best to you in 2011 and beyond.

Michael - nope, it was entirely deliberate, but then I reconsidered, given my audience, mostly those who might land on this blog by accident and be rather confused..:-)

Inna.

Give yourself lots more credit, I think people land here because you have character and spunk!  I heard today that Lady GAGA has over 5 million FB friends....she has only 2 million selling albums.  I may be of the minority, but I don't yet get FB....I do it like you state "take care of your name and reputation" keeps me busy enough

Jackie - thanks, and you too have a fab weekend.:-)

My dear JMac - I, too, have it all... Those morning cups of coffee, shared with the one I love mean a heck of a lot more than the greenbacks used to purchase said coffee.  Less greenbacks will simply mean a crappier brand, but will diminish nothing else.

Your sharing with a friend is missed in these parts, and greatly appreciated.:-)
