Some Days Are Like That!

So. I'm trying to write a blog post and I have this great idea.  I'll do a contrast between 1900 and the present about Sellwood,  my neighborhood in Portland.   It's a great idea.  I have some photos of the old storefronts, the Tritt Barbershop and the old Sellwood Bank as well as photos of the shops that are housed in those buildings now.

It is a great idea.  Except for one thing.  I can't find my file that has the old photos.  I know I have it.  Just not where.  I can find the current photos.  But not the old ones.  I used some of them the other day in a post and since then, they appear to have disappeared.

Now I know it is just because I am not consistent in how I label files.  I tend to have 'logical' ideas about how files and folders should be labled.  Problem is, what is a logical label can change from one day to the next.

Then the other thing that is working against me is time.  The clock time.  I want to post it today so that it counts for today of the January challenge.   But, I am on the west coast and when it is 9 pm here, it is midnight on the east coast -- which for some reason is the time zone that registers when I post.  So every day I work hard to post before 9 pm.  Normally I wouldn't care what time it as when I post -- but because the challenge is at least one post a day - I figure it makes a difference.

The reason that time works against me is that when I feel time pressure -- meet a post deadline, and I haven't started to write til 815 o so -- well, I get tense.  Then the memory bank gets clogged, and the labeling issue becomes more of an issue.

To add to the pressure, I have been rushing all day because I am getting ready to take a few days off.  That's a hooray thing -- but you know how it is.  Lots of things to do: loose ends, clients to call, notes to write, files to update, addendums to write and email, the postoffice to notify, the paper to stop, the trash pickup to cancel, and a networking event in the early evening.  Not to mention there is laundry to do, a few errands to run, children to let know, a little vacuuming to do, packing - and the bathroom to clean!   You guessed it, I am a little compulsive about what must be done before I can leave town, if only for a few days.

So. Long story short: the memory bank did not kick in to tell me how the file is labeled, and I had to punt.  This is today's post. Lots accomplished, but not the post I wanted to write - and not posted by midnight eastern time.

Yes, some days are like that!  Good post for a busy day...sometimes we do just have to punt!  Good job!

Oh gosh, I understand exactly how and what you mean.  The older I get the more I can't locate "things" that had just been in my hands hours ago!  It is driving me nuts.  As you say, "some days are just like that".

Have a great few days off.

Oh boy can I identify with that! Trying to figure out what I called something when I filed it sometimes makes me wild.

For print files I've finally started using the "find" feature on word... if I can remember a few words that "surely must be" on a page, then I can usually find it. But... I don't always stop and put names on photos. And if I did, I wouldn't remember what those names were!

My paper files are just as bad...some things seem to get swallowed up in there. So every now and then I find I have 2 files with the same name because I couldn't find the first one when I wanted to file something.

Good luck finding those old photos - and more luck in putting them where you'll find them next time!

Hi Alexsandra -- Glad it all worked out and you got your post in!  Isn't this challenge great?  I'm so glad I committed to it.

Regarding the photos, have you tried using Picasa?  It's a free photo organizing tool and when I installed it last year, I couldn't believe how easy it was to find my photos -- and I have several years worth like most agents do!  You can also do great photo editing, make collages, watermarks, many many features.

Sometimes it's easier to just stay home....When my kids were babies it would terrify me of all of the things to pack...God forbid I would forget something HUGE...Then they got older and I realized...The worst thing that could happen I could forget...Last time I checked they have stores pretty much everywhere...

Lesson learned...Calm down...it's not the end of the world if I forget something and part of the fun of vacationing is the journey there...It's not like the dust bunnies are going to be angry....

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

KIm

Barbara -- thanks.  and I've learned, punting is not always a bad thing either.

Sue -- so nice to be understood! and thanks - I will enjoy the time.

Marte -- that is exactly the problem.  I have more than one file with things labeled slightly differently each time.  Then - when I find them, I never know which one I should delete! :-(

Robin - I will do the Sellwood photos.  I know I'll find when not stressed.

Kim -- you'd think I'd know by now that the dust bunnies don't get mad.  Actually there will be some when I get back any how - even if they had been cleaned up!

Joetta --  You are so right, they'll be in plain view and I'll say - how on earth did I miss that!  Hope you enjoy when it gets done.

Chirag - glad to know it was helpful!

DJ --  If I ever get it figured out -- I promise a post on the results.

Steve - It is time consuming.  I guess that is why mine are not so organized!

I have to admit as I was driving down SE 13th the other day toward Portland Memorial and saw a lady dressed as Wonder Woman that I might see it on your blog. I wish we had a place to pull over, because it just screamed Portland.

Retrieving stored files is not always easy--I think it would take hours to organize my photos--the current method is rather haphazard and I'm always a bit surprised when I put my finger on the file without a full-fledged search.

Norma -- it's the haphazard system that is the killer for me.  WHen I find something easily it is a real gift of time in my life!
