Ute Indians were the first to enjoy the healing powers of the Hot Mineral Springs in Glenwood.
They called it Yampa, meaning Big Medicine.
Like most Colorado mountain towns in the late 1800s Glenwood Springs was full of "gamblers, gunslingers, miners and madams".
In 1890 a bath house, lodge and pool were built near the Hot Springs.
Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and William Taft, Al Capone and the Unsinkable Molly Brown were among some of the famous visitors as well as gunslinger/gambler Doc Holliday. Doc Holliday's final resting place is in Glenwood Springs.
We really enjoyed our recent trip there and the Big Medicine at the Spa of the Rockies.
Glenwood Springs is located 40 miles North of Aspen and 60 miles west of Vail at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers.
Not only is Glenwood known for the Hot Springs but also for kayaking, river rafting, fly fishing, hiking in the Canyon and the Sunlight Mountain ski area. Today, it is bustling with activity and a great place for a little Colorado mountain get-a-way for the entire family.
One of my favorite parts, beside spending time with the family was driving through the awesome Glenwood Canyon.
