Flyers are Dead?

Flyers are Dead?

flyer clipartFlyers are dead. Newspapers are dead. Magazines are dead. Snail mail is dead. Technology has taken over.

Do you believe this?

Well I don't. The latest surveys show that newspaper and magazine readership is increasing. And flyers have a definite place in a well designed marketing program.

You may say that you don't need flyers because you are using QR codes. Only 50% of cellular users have smart phones and of this number, the majority don't have a clue what a QR code is.

But let's get back to flyers.

Flyers are a hands-on type of media. When a person has something solid in their hands it means something. We get bombarded every day by thousands of media messages. It is extremely easy to forget the last ad that you heard on the radio or saw on TV. It's also very easy to forget the last TV commercial.

Cat & printsBut if you picked up a flyer, chances are that you will look at it again. It is easier than ever to produce professional quality using your own computer. You have the ability to print just one or hundreds.

Some agents think that flyers are only to place in brochure boxes. But your use of flyers is only limited by your imagination. A primary use should be to place flyers inside the listing so that potential buyers can pick them up and remember that particular listing whether shown by you or someone else. I have placed flyers on bulletin boards, mailed them directly, passed them out at events and even handed them out door to door.

Oh, and let's not forget that snail mail. One of the important parts of my marketing program is to send personalized cards from SendOut cards. They get a fantastic response because they are hands-on and include photos of the property and/or clients.

Gary- while I'm not a Realtor, I do agree that the printed word still has a place.  Not everyone has a Smartphone and even those that do may not want to view information on such a small screen. Good luck with the Kodak contest.

Good luck with the contest Gary!

I must say I agree with you on this one. Consumers need something in their hands to read. We need to be savvy as well, as you mentioned, have the flyers on our websites, use QR Codes and so on.

Kathy,  Thank you.  It is so easy to get caught up with technology and forget that some of the older forms of marketing are extremely important.

Terrie, Thank you.  I have always felt that the physical act of holding a flyer means something.

Gary - Flyers are not dead, not by a long shot!!  All the technical stuff is fun and useful however a flyer is a physical reminder of a property.  Go ahead and throw the flyer on your desk.  Guess what, every time you have to move it to get to something else it is a reminder of that property.  Thanks for the post.

Gary - it always feels good when someone turns up with my flyer in hand that they had obtained by their own efforts. Ice already broken. I agree with your comments on QR codes - they have ways to go to produce good returns.

Gary, great Flyer post. I agree with you, having a tangible ad in your hand helps clients remember a property. I prefer reading printed newspapers and books as opposed to online text. Also, flyers have lots of uses, as you mentioned. Good luck with the contest.

Gary - I can imagine a couple driving around various neighborhoods scouting. (No agent yet)

(As a listing agent, I want to make sure that my info is not only seen (once), I want to put something in their hands that they will hold onto for a while. I actually had a home owner call me from a Brochure that was just over a year old. I turned that call into a $869K listing, and a sale.)

So, tonight when the couple gets home, when they review their findings. They will then not only see my "Home for Sale", they'll see my "Featured Property Page", my web site(s), and most importantly my Branding.

I also put great emphasis on printing a "Brochure" not a flyer :) Quality make a huge difference!

Steve,  Flyers make perfect reminders. Thanks for stopping by.

Larry, It is a great feeling to see them holding the flyer.

Jane, Thank you.  It seems that too many people forget the value of flyers.

Elizabeth, I use my computer for news and Kindle versions of books but there is something even better when I can hold them.

Brian,  Excellent points. I think most of my flyers could also be considered brochures and I really agree on the quality.

Gary, while we do the online stuff, we also do flyers, handouts, postcards and many other different types of marketing.  I think the best approach is a good mix of different types of marketing media, tangible and online.  That way you can capture a wider variety of consumer.

Gary, flyers are not dead and some things are in print that you won't find on the internet - and if it is there, it's gone in a day or so and hard to find. We're not all paperless yet! Congrats on winning!

Evelyn, As long as our clients ( and I think they are like you and I) like to hold the paper, flyers will be useful.

Sharon, Thank you.  It was a surprise to win. And things often do last longer in print - I don't use stone tablets though. LOL

Very nice. I also think that with older people they have no idea what or how a smart phone works. Much less a QR code. So flyers are a must with them. I also place in laundry matts.. Lots of renters wash there clothes there!
