That Hidden Workplace Virus: Employee Emotions

One of the most mysterious elements involved in helping change a company’s culture is the strong influence that people’s emotions have in the workplace.

Everybody brings their emotions to work. You bring your brain to work…. you bring your emotions to work. Feelings drive performance. They drive behavior and other people’s feelings. And as much as we don’t want to believe it, all people can act as emotion conductors. In other words, the emotional charge that they deliver in the working environment, either positive or negative, can move in a viral manner throughout the organization. This is why it’s so important for leaders to understand the basic emotional strengths and weaknesses that are present in their team members.

One of the best commentators on this phenomenon that I’ve read recently is Sigal Barsade, a Wharton management professor who studies the influence of emotions on the workplace. Take a look at this recent review of his paper titled “Why Does Affect Matter in Organizations?” (The word “affect” is used here to describe emotion in organizational behavior.)
