Are Stainless Steel Appliances in Style for 2012?

We were recently asked this interior design question, through "Ask Andrea":

"Dear Andrea, To keep a kitchen up to date for 2012, what color appliances would you recommend? If stainless steel is on it's way out, I don't want to have a kitchen full of it!!"

According to Andrea Enns, Stanton Homes' Interior Design Expert, Stainless Steel is Here to Stay

"In review of interior design trends as outlined by three top design associations, Color Association of the United States, the Appliance Manufacturers Association, and Pantone (whose color forecasts have been relied upon for decades by manufacturers and designers around the globe) stainless steel appliances are a safe investment.

New Home Kitchen Design Budgets Keep Going Up

In quick terms, kitchen design is continuing to be the front runner of focus in new homes. In no other room are we seeing as much attention to detail.

Along with that, kitchen budgets are still creeping higher in relation to the rest of the house.

Formal living rooms and even formal dining rooms are fading into the past and are thus eliminating the need for money spent on furniture and expensive decor that will never be used by the average homeowner.

Kitchens are the Heart of the Home

Kitchens are being recognized as not only the heart of the home, but also quite often the focal point and centerpiece.

Often open to large great rooms, the kitchen now looks less "kitcheny" and more often like an inviting place to gather and entertain.

The decorative elements that are strong right now include natural finishes like wood and stone but they are complimented by glass, shiny metallics, special attention to lighting details, and even crystal.

Stainless Steel Maintains its Popularity in 2012 Design Trends

Stainless steel will continue to be a favored choice for your kitchen appliance finish.

Since stainless steel has been used in the best kitchens for over a century due to its universal appeal, its ability to provide a sterile surface, its shiny appearance, as well as its association with luxury.

Don't like Stainless Steel? You're in Luck.

The second most popular color is currently black, which is due to its more formal appearance in relation to the rest of the common areas of your home:

This is the age old discussion all the time with my sister, the caterer.  She loves the black appliances and abhors the constant polishing that stainless steel appliances need.  I love the look and feel of the stainless steel appliances.  As a metal it is part of the major elements of earth, metal, water, and fire. Because of hard water stains on the black appliances, I stay away from them.  Both appliances are visually appealing.  It's nice to hear that we both like the top two trends in Kitchen design.

Excellent post, Penny.  I will reblog soon.  My mom is finally going to redo her kitchen.  can't wait since I'm doing floors, backsplash and granite...if she can ever make up her mind.

Good evening Penny,

Great post. Stainless Appliances are King in Austin. The newer models are much easier to clean and look so sharp! White is definitely out!!

For families with sticky-fingered young children, black may be easiest to deal with.  But black appliances can be very elegant, especially when the cabinets, countertops, and backsplash are planned around those as a centerpiece.   Black is great with Cherry, especially.
