14 th. Sound & Silence
Mother's Day Run/Walk
May 8, 2011
Held in Saanich at Island View Rd. and Lockside Trail, the May 8, 2011 event will mark the 14th. anniversary of this very popular race to support the deaf and hard of hearing.
The Cause
Hearing loss is Canada's fastest growing chronic disability, and the challenges of living with a hearing loss are as diverse as the individuals and families touched by it.
In Greater Victoria approx. 13,000 people have some degree of hearing loss. Because of the unique communication needs, many rarely socialize, engage in leisure or volunteer activities or speak on the phone.
Isolation, depression, substance abuse and an overall increased risk to personal safety are some of the common issues that those with hearing loss are affected with.
The funds raised from the Sound & Silence walk benefit the Island Deal and Hard of Hearing Centre (IDHHC) and in turn support people living with a hearing loss through a wide range of programs and services offered at IDHHC.
These include:
- Individual and Family Counseling.
- Employment,
- Vocational and Career Counseling,
- Individual Advocacy.
- Support Groups.
- Aural Rehabilitation.
- Technical Aids.
- Interpreting and Captioning Services.
The Walk / Run
This Professionally timed course is open to all levels of participants, bringing together members from the running community walking clubs, elite running clubs, supporters of the agency, clients and volunteers.
Participants can choose to enter either the 10 km run, 10 km walk, or 5 km walk.
Awards and ribbons are presented immediately following the event with a Sign Language Interpreter and Captionist present to provide communication support for those participants who are deaf or hard of hearing.
