Once Upon A Time...

Around the turn of the 20th Century, the Territory of Arizona was anxious to join the United States. The USA then consisted of 46 states, but, in order to join the union, certain prices had to be paid.

First, the Territory was a lawless mess. Partially because the Texas Rangers had done such a great job of cleaning up their state, many "bad hombres" came to Arizona. After all, there were stage coaches and trains to rob, gambling, prostitution, and rustling... what fun for bad guys!

The problem of lawlessness was solved by the Arizona Rangers. Formed in 1901, with a force never exceeding 26 men, the Arizona Rangers, by 1909, had done their jobs. Incredibly, with a territory consinsg of 15 counties, and a land area of over 110,000 square miles, those rugged lawmen "cleaned-up" the territory, removing one roadblock. It is nearly unbelievable that these 26 men could ever even locate an outlaw in a territory that was the same shape and size as toda'y state, but with mainly horses and mules for transportation throughout the state. Good job, guys!

Then, as partial payment for the privelege of becoming a part of the Union, the Territory had to cede much of its land to the US goverment. That "GIFT," along with the setting aside of many Indian reservations, resulted in greatly reduced private land ownership in Arizona. When all was said and done, only 17% of Arizona's glorious lands are in the hands of private owners.

Should you decide to settle in Arizona, it may be of interest to you that it is relatively common for private lands to back up to government lands. Often (though you might pay a premium for said adjacency) there is generally access to the public lands, offering marvelous recreational activities, including, hiking, horseback riding, and birding.

So... although I will remind you again, mark your calendars: Arizona will turn 100 years of age on February 14, 2012. Please help us celebrate.

Also, as we know, God isn't making any more land. Be sure and buy yours, while you have the chance!
