I'm not a huge racing fan but I do love the pomp and ceremony of The Kentucky Derby.
Each year, it has been a tradition of my Mother and I, to celebrate the day together.
Coincidentally, it is usually the first Saturday of the year that we can enjoy my 3 season sun room too.
We are surrounded by our tulips, daffodils and forsythia all in bloom. The lilac leaves and the flowering crab are just coming into bud and, we can pretty much count on SUNSHINE - something long overdue after the Canadian winters we endure!
I make tiny little girlie appetizers and we also enjoy the traditional Mint Julip and toast the spring, the flowers, the horses and the silliest of hats we see! (I have some Royal Wedding style hats for us to wear ourselves while we watch the Derby !!)
Just for the record, my pick for a win is PANTS ON FIRE!!
(mainly because that is what I say to people when they're not being honest with me - yes, I'll not ever grow up!)
(( but also because I love the bright pink and orange silks!!))
Here is our traditional Mint Julip recipe for you to enjoy with us on Kentucky Derby Saturday:
8 fresh mint sprigs
5 oz Bourbon
2 tsp powdered sugar
4 tsp water
Muddle mint leaves, powdered sugar, and water in a silver goblet (or a collins glass).
Fill the glass with shaved ice and add bourbon. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig. Serve with a straw.
We actually have 2 glass straws that we use only on Derby Day. I had Silver ones, once upon a time that came with the goblets but I think I've just moved too many times and they've gone missing!
I don't know how you'll be enjoying your Saturday, but today is reserved for my Mother and after the last few days we've had, she's really looking forward to it!
Wish my horse success :0)
