payPay it Forward - Hedging in the Heat

How do you help a 87 year old man, who is moving to assisted living and wants to sell his home?  This past week I took from 7 am until noon to help my wife's uncle who has 6 kids (but only 4 live in the area) trim his over grown brushes with one of his daugthers.

He is moving from a home that has seen 6 kids and a loving wife which he has enjoyed for the last 51 years.  He is not thrilled about moving but due to a fall in which he was on the floor for 12 hours with no help, he and his family have come to a decision that he must move.

When I asked him, what he thinks need done before he sells his home, he said "I can not sell my home with the bushes looking like that."

Well I have a hedge trimmer and needed some outside time, so instead of going golfing, I helped him out.

Hope when I get up in years, someone will help me.

Will ... Thanks for reminding here that we need to look for opportunities to help people (not limited to those who are old).  Lots of people are in need of a warm smile, handshake, hug, good greeting, getting their shrubs away from the house, taking care of a pet in need, visiting about their kids and families, and so many other things.

Will, A little kindness helps to ease other's troubles and glad you were able to help. Golf will still be there once the work is done!

I think that by helping out your neighbor, you batted a hole in one that could not be achieved on the golf course. Or maybe you putted a home run?

Will- I like Mona's analogy above. You gained far more in helping your neighbor than you would have on a golf course. Years down the road when we all find ourselves in this gentlemen's position imagine how thankful we'll be to someone like you who is so willing to help. Great pay it forward!

Such a hard decision to move from not only a home but a very personal emotional memory.  Glad you can pitch in to help and I know you will get the home sold with style as well which will enable him and family to concentrate on the next new journey.  All the best!

Will,

I know what you're going through. Last November I listed a woman's home under similar circumstances. I worked harder on her lising that required 30 years of work, than any other property. I stayed focued on her goal - not mine. When I took the listing, I realized that commission, if I got a buyer, was going to be a very small one. I didn't let money overshadow my goals.

In the process, I realized the true meaning behind the phrase, "time is of the essence."

The property sold quickly. The lady moved into assisted living. Her children came to visit during the last few months of her life. I went to the funeral services and to my surprise, when a family member gave thanks to the people who were there for their mom, I was included.

You will get through this and your rewards will not come monetarily.

Patricia

What a great way to pay it forward for your uncle. Who better to give the place some curb appeal than a great real estate agent.

Will.. It always feels gratifying when you help others that can't help themselves.  I'm glad you were there for your uncle.  I bet the bushes look great now.
