PCS TO MARYLAND - THE BRAC EFFECT
BRAC in MARYLAND is in full swing. After nearly 2 years, cranes and bulldozers are a familiar sight on National Support Activity Bethesda (NSA Bethesda). The Flagship of Naval Medicine has transcended into the World's largest Military Medical Center.
Apparently, BRAC does not only mean consolidating bases but its acronyms as well: WRAMC (Walter Reed ARMY Medical Center) + NNMC Bethesda (National Naval Medical Center) = WRNMMCB. There seems to be quite a bit of confusion what it stands for. And lets be honest, it does not exactly roll off the tongue easily.
While walking the halls of the hospital recently, I overheard all sorts of creative interpretations what WRNMMCB stands for, from staff and visitors alike:
- Walter Reed No More Medical Center is probably the most memorable,
- World Renowned Medical Center the most fitting
Officially the acronym WRNMMCB stands for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda. Now try saying that 3 times in a row!
By the way, it was just recently decided to add the B for Bethesda at the end - one more letter doesn't really matter. The B has a rightful place in the new acronym, after all Bethesda has been synonymous with Navy Medicine for decades. It is still and will continue to be a Navy base - as well as the President's hospital. Even today the main deck of building 1 is an exact replica in size & shape of the oval office.
