Toilet Installation Spacing

Did you know there are requirements for spacing when a toilet is installed in a home?  Not the most pleasant of topics, I know, but even more unpleasant if not done properly.  Look at the picture below.  What’s wrong?

tight toilet space

ANSWER:  Recommended spacing around a toilet installation is a minimum of 15” from the center of the toilet to the next vertical surface on the sides and 24” from the front of the toilet to the next surface in front of the toilet.  In fact, the spacing here was only approximately 13” from the center of the toilet to the walls next to the toilet.  So in this installation we missed clearly on the sides and sort of  have the 24” in front of the toilet.  I say "sort of" regarding the spacing in front of the toilet because the idea is to have the 24" in front of the toilet that stretches across the entire 30" width.  So without the 30" width you can make the case that we never had the 24" in front of the toilet either.  And then there is the issue of that little encroachment from the wall on the right in the picture also.  An artist rendering below from Code Check shows the proper installation dimensions.

Richard - probably something most people don't think about on paper, until they see a very tight set-up in 3-D!  I am all for private water closets, as long as they don't feel like coffins!

Hello Sharon,

I agree!  This installation almost looks like an after-thought.  In fact, this was part of a renovation/addition, and I wonder if they were working on the bathroom and suddenly realized they forgot to put a toilet in.
