Someone done stole Brer Rabbit, please bring him back to the Briarpatch!

If you follow my blog you will know that the Uncle Remus Museum in Eatonton Georgia is very special to me.  Two of the people I held most dear in my life worked there.  I loved both mother Norma Wiford and daughter Norma Watterson very much.  And last night when it rained over an inch at my house I couldn't help but think God and the Normas were crying because someone STOLE Brer Rabbit.

I am heart broken, but also angry over it.  How dare someone.  I have wished many awful things (like home they drop it on their foot and break it). I admit I've also had some thoughts that I won't put into my blog.

I'm just really sick over it.  The Board of Dirctors is working hard to see if the mold can be located and another one made.  Personally I'm hoping that Brer Rabbit can outsmart the theif and find his way back to the briarpatch, just the way he outsmarted Brer Fox, back in the day.

So if you know something please call the Eatonton Police Department at 706-485-3551.  If you took Brer Rabbit he wants to come home and may you be cursed and plagued by bad karma for life if you do not return him.

For the rest of you...  Cross your fingers, say a prayer, send good vibes... pray some more... that our Brer Rabbit will find his way home.

Hi Tammy - Thaty's awful. I hope they find him. I grew up with Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox and the Tarbaby, but hadn't thought about them for years, and had no idea there was a musuem. I wish the occasion of remembering them had been a happier one.

Tammy, I am also sad to hear this.    I travel through Eatonton a couple of times per year on our way to North Carolina, just to see Brer Rabbit and his friends.

What about the Statues on the Courthouse Lawn?  Are they still in place?

Who would take Brer Rabbit?  Some high school pranksters?  Perhaps Metal Thieves?

     Bring back Brer Rabbit, please.

IMHO:   Uncle Remus is more than a "Southern Tradition".

The morals, wisdom, and sage advice of Uncle Remus are on a par with Aesop or Chaucer.

The hymns of salvation that he sang are truly uplifiting and inspiring.

Thank you, Joel Chandler Harris, for collecting these wonderful stories and songs.

Dick- wonderful stories aren't they?  I too wish you had happened upon one of my other happier posts about Brer Rabbit.

Christina- I just notified the closest news station and hopefully the police thought of that.  I hated to post "bad news", but I also wanted as much exposure as possible in case someone knows something

Fred- I agree with you view of Joel Chandler Harris and his collection of Uncle Remus tales.  Great stories with a good moral lesson in each one.  I'd love for you stop by and have a cup of coffee with me on one of your trips through Eatonton.  Do you travel on 441 south of town or 129?

There are some sick bas--rds in this world.  Hendersonville, NC has a contest with artists decorating these huge bears and then they are displayed on Main St. Proceeds benefit charities.  Two bears were stolen by college punks for a prank.  Value is over $1600 per bear putting that little escapade into the felony category...who got punked now???

I hope the Lake Sinclair punks get caught and put in the stockades for everyone to throw stinking, steaming, rotten tomatoes at...and then I hope it's put on the front page, and then I hope you post a blog about it that we can all reblog and then I hope they have to repaint crosswalks during a Georgia summer afternoon and all they get to drink is Yankee tea without sugar.

Think that would be enough of a prayer meeting for them?

Tammy, on my next trip to North Carolina, I promise to stop by and have coffee.  I would enjoy meeting you!

     * Some trips to NC, we get off I-75 at Macon and take 129 through downtown Eatonton and on to Athens.   Other trips we get off I-75 at Forsyth, and take 83 through Monticello to Madison to Athens.   We used to go through Atlanta, but the traffic there is just too much.

Susan- I hope they can't sleep and a good case of food poisoning wouldn't hurt my feelings either.

Mona- I'd hire a professional videographer for that blog. I needed to laugh and you just accomplished that.

Fred- I used to have relatives in Tallashasee (well they are still there but now they are just related to my daughter and my X)  I would be delighted to have your family stop in... I am about 6 miles from the 129/441 intersection on the south side.  And if you don't have a copy of Song of the South... I'd be more than happy to get you one if you'd like.

Vandalism and theft like this Tammy is so pointless. I feel that pain you have and hope some justice happens with this story in the long run.

Tammy - one of my favorite songs starts with the line "When I was a kid Uncle Remus would put me to bed".  I hope the statue is returned.  I just read a story last week about a tea cup that was stolen from a museum in Missoula, MT.  The thief traded it to two street musicians for all they had in their guitar case, they thought the cup was "jinxed" so they threw it in the bushes.  Two nights later they are playing at a party and see one identical to it and comment to it's owner, who immediately has them go get the cup they threw in the bushes and return it to its rightful owner.  I hope your statue also finds its way back home.
