9/11 Services of Remembrance ~ San Antonio
The San Antonio community has organized several ways to pay tribute and honor those who perished in the 9/11 attacks.
Alamo Plaza 9/11 Memorial
A commemoration service is planned for Sunday morning at Alamo Plaza, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. Organizers will observe moments of silence at the exact moments the four different attacks occurred. There will be patriotic music, prayer from local clergy and remarks by top local military leaders, Mayor Castro, and the highest ranks in our police and fire departments will speak.
Soldier's Angels Run for Remembrance
Soldier's Angels, a non-profit group dedicated to supporting the men and women of our armed forces, will host "September 11: Run for Remembrance." The run will be 9 Hours 11 Minutes and 01 Second long where teams of nine will run 1 mile at a time alternating runners. The team relay will start at 10:00 p.m. on the 10th at Olmos Park.
The relay will be followed by moments of silence to correspond with the timing of the September 11 attacks and to commemorate those who lost their lives that morning.
All proceeds will go to Soldier's Angels mission of getting 100,000 care packages sent out to troops deployed this holiday season.
Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run
On September 11, 2001, Stephen Siller just finished an overnight shift when the first Twin Tower was attacked. He immediately went back to work to join Squad 1. The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was already closed, so Siller ran the tunnel, wearing 60 pounds of gear, to meet his company at the tower. He perished in the with 342 other NYFD firefighters and nearly 3000 others.
The 5K run honors their memories. The race takes place Sunday on North Alamo Street at Peacock Alley, across the street from the Federal Building at 9:05am.
Blue Star Moms
The public is invited to the "Freedom is Not Free" event at the Knights of Columbus Hall in New Braunfels at 111 Landa Street, from noon to 4 p.m. The event features the Traveling Texas Memorial Wall that lists the names of our heroes who have fallen in all conflicts since the terrorists attacks 10 years ago. , from noon to 4 p.m.
BBQ will be available for $6 a plate with proceeds going to "Homes for Our Troops" which builds handicapped accessible homes for wounded warriors. The event runs from noon to 4:00 p.m.
American Legion
The American Legion Post No. 336 will commemorate the anniversary with the second annual river ride on the San Antonio river. Two barges will leave the entrance at the Hilton Paseo del Rio at noon. The river parade is the post's way of honoring the brave people killed in New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon on that fateful day in 2001.
