A Day on Block Island- Rhode Island's Best Kept Secret

A Day on Block Island- Rhode Island's Best Kept Secret It is the escape anyone might be looking Leaving Galilee RIfor...stress free, full of sun and beaches, great food at the restaurants, boating haven for sure and yes so much more- that is right I am talking about RI's best kept secret Block Island.

Pristine in landscape, rolling hills (really on this small island of 17 miles of beaches), high bluffs and precipices, it captivates the soul to be spending time here and that is what I did a week ago with friends.

Old Harbor Block Island RIScooting away aboard the Block Island ferry from Galilee RI, it is a 50 minute ferry ride to Old Harbor which is where the town is. We're going to BI we shout out as we pull away from the dock!  It is a smooth sail over and pulling into Old Harbor where the marinas are as well as New Harbor, motoring or sailing your boat into this picturesque 'Bermuda of the North' island is on a first come, first served placement.  So be early!

Most people will bring their bikes over from the mainland to pedal the roadways or rent mopeds to explore theBlock Island RI View Block Island.  Either way BI drivers are very tolerant in sharing the roadways with the tourists.  This island is here to be explored by all who come from the lighthouses to the beach pathways, there is a full day's worth of exploration to be had.  Don't forget about Southeast Light - it almost went into the ocean before this historic lighthouse was moved back from the edge of the Bluffs.

Block Island RI beachYou will want to shop a bit and pick up a Block Island souvenir or just decide to eat up a storm at the many great restaurants that line the roadway in town.  We hit 'sushi Bob' s place up and it was, as I have heard, the best place to get sushi I have been to!  The lines were long and take a number and hope he doesn't run out of spicy tuna rolls before my number is called.

Live music flows through the air as you wander down to BI's Crescent Beach which is part of the town beach and yes, it is free to all.  Woo hoo! Nothing like the salt water and waves to set you at ease and ponder the beautiful creation of simple enjoyment at hand.  Relaxation was the order of the day and I was feeling like jello for sure.

A day in the life of a North Kingstown realtor is to explore and appreciate the landscapes of one's state evenSoutheast Lighthouse when busy - for how else can you sell it?!  You will find 95% of the BI real estate here over $1 million up to nearly $8 million so it is high priced real estate and deep pockets are required especially since most of the homes are summer homes for out of state dwellers.  If you have the dollars, I can find the BI real estate to match your needs...with 40 Block Island homes for sale on the small island there is a diverse selection to choose from.

Catching the last ferry was unfortunately a must for me.  Yet there are plenty of nice hotels and B & B's to stay in on BI.  One thing you will not find is any hotel chains or restaurant chains on BI...it is kept that way for a reason.  So come and enjoy southern Rhode Island's best kept secret Block Island. Ginny, Have always heard great things about Block Island, but never made it out there when we lived in Newport, funding was a little tight for excursions as newlyweds in the mid-80s :)  Bill

Ginny -love Block Island, we rented houses for (seemingly) the whole summer when I was growing up in NJ!  It is so magical, and although I have not been back in many years, I have been to Nantucket recently, which (seems) very similar. Thanks for the fabulous post!

Oh yes, that's a great area.  We stayed at the Ocean House a couple of times and then took a day trip there.

Ginny - Block Island reminds me of a town I visited in Northern Germany this summer.  I really love it and I just wish that one day I will visit Block Island.  Thanks for sharing your very informative post about Block Island.

Hi Ginny.  Love Block Island.    Took the ferry once and went to "Ballard's" on the beach.      They had music there and all.   Great time.    Flew into their airport once too and enjoyed looking at the island from the air even more!

Ginny - I love Block Island and my parents use to take us there all the time when we were kids. We'd always stay at the 1661 Inn and I remember playing badminton on the grounds and going to wine and cheese hour. We'd go to Ballards for dinner some nights and I order a whole half of chicken - it was the best. The whole Island is so quaint and charming and I hope to go back some day soon!

Ginny, as long as the menus include lobster omelettes, lobster fajitas, and filet mignon stuffed with lobster I think I can twist a few arms to get there someday.  Oh yeah, and lobster bisque of course!

Ginny -- We were supposed to have gone to Block Island a few weeks back, but could not pull it together due to schedules. I have been there many times since I was a kid. I absolutely LOVE the island. Those cliffs are awesome. Have spent many an afternoon at Ballards and on the beach. I have a lot of BI T-shirts to prove it. I used to always go out of Galilee as it was such a short distance.  Now New London has the high speed ferry, but I have not even been on it yet!  You are lucky to be so close to such a fabulous spot!
