Classic homes and classic finishes

It isn’t easy to choose.  There are so many beautiful looks,  That’s why, when designing a kitchen, I always start with the countertops. While the options are numerous, the countertops make a big impact in the kitchen and will often define your color palette.

Marble is magnificent,  but it’s a porous surface and needs frequent sealing, making it considerably   high maintenance.  Since my clients cook, I don't recommend it.  Man made surfaces are beautiful and low maintenance, but they also have greater uniformity and easily reproduced, so that unique impact can be compromised.  And, it's just as expensive as natural stone.  So, I frequently select granite for the kitchens I design http://fresheyesforyourhome.com/ and here’s why:

  •       Granite is beautiful.  It's not a trend, but a timeless beauty and it's use goes back to ancient  Egypt.
  •    Granite has depth.  Sunlight reflects on it in a way that you can actually see depth in each piece.
  •    No two pieces of granite are the same.  Veining patterns, specks, swirls, and pitting all vary.  That make is a very artistic stone
  • santa cecilia granite westchester NY   Granite can be expensive, but it will add value to your home when you go to resell it.  However, you can find some deals if you are willing to look around a little  One of the best ways to save some money is to go to the granite warehouse directly and pick your own stone.  You can choose from among less expensive pieces if you wish, just ask the  salesperson what the differences, advantages, etc., there are between different pieces.  Often it is just veining pattern, or how much a piece is pitted or not.
  •   Granite is clean.  It doesn't harbor bacteria and is a sanitary top.  It is also relatively easy to clean.  You can clean it with a mild soap and water, but you can also get special granite or stone cleaners that provide a protective thin film.
  •    Granite stays beautiful and in good shape by applying a sealer, approximately once a year.  Sealing isn't difficult.  It is like waxing your car (but a whole lot easier because it's flat).   Granite can be damaged by acidic things, like orange juice or cola left on the countertop too long.  Sealing and using stone cleansers prior to this happening hinders any staining.  You can also get stains out with a paste made from bleach and flour that you let sit on a stain.  Be sure to rinse well.
  • One of the biggest benefits of granite countertops is that they can be formed into any shape that you like.  Granite can be cut into curves, arches, squares, ovals, 90 or 45 degree angles or special routered edges.
  • Granite is very durable and strong.  Although it can chip, it can also usually be repaired by a professional.
  • Granite is hard to scratch.  You can actually cut on your granite countertop.  The only substances that are as hard or harder are quartz and diamonds respectfully.
  • Granite is cool to the touch, so it makes the perfect cooking area to rollout dough or make candy.
  • Granite countertops are actually heat resistant.  You can set hot pots and pans, use fryers or toaster ovens, right on the countertops without worrying that they will scorch or burn.
  • Granite is usually sold solid (1 1/4" thick for countertops), so you can easily utilize undermount sinks in granite.  This is actually the preferred look.
  • You don't have to use an undermount sink in granite.  You can also easily use farm house or "apron" type sinks, vessel sinks, as well as self-rimming (top mounting) sinks.
  • Some companies are making granite countertops where the granite is only a 1/4" or so thick, then mounted to a substrate board (like fiberglass).  This allows for those on a tighter budget to have granite countertops.

Joanna- this is such good information for anyone considering remodeling their kitchen.  There are so many choices these days it's hard to keep up with all of them.  It's also nice to know that those on a tighter budget will have an option for granite too.

Even though some people are getting tired of granite, you've pointed out why it is still a viable, smart option.

Hi Joanna.  Yes, I so prefer granite to the other choices.  It's a true piece of history millions of years in the making.

Debbie-granite always adds an interesting textural look to the kitchen

Beth-I know people tire of granite but it remains the most durable/cost effective natural stone. There are great engineered countertops for a different loo with equal durability.

Hillary-I love the fact that granite was initially used in Egypt-probably inside the pyramids!

Joanna, granite is my countertop of choice but I'm seeing more and more updated homes using quartz products.  I'm not sure how granite lovers will feel about quartz but many high-end installations are happening.  Good information, thanks for sharing.

Joanna ~ It was interesting to find out that a mixture of bleach and flour can be used to remove a stain from granite.  I'm going to try this out -- thanks for the tip!

Ginger-I am actually doing a home with quartz right now and while it is beautiful, it is pricey and does not have a lot of movement and drama-I use it when clients want a very clean and simple look and the drama is in the cabinets

Maureen-yes it's great when you can use an inexpensive and natural concoction t to remove a stain isn't it?

When possible, I also recommend selecting your stone in person.  Some people want a lot of veining, others don't.

Julia, absolutely.  It's always a fun trip to the yard and at least people can see what the actual pattern is and if there is a particular area they don't like and it's possible to avoid it or put it in a less visible spot, it always helps.
