Run....don't walk, stroll or lollygag. This production is worth it.
'Burial at Thebes' is somewhat reminescent of the Gospel at Colunus, which I bought the tape for on the spot.
J.D. Steele and Marcela Lorca have made an immensely memorbale production of the story of Antigone told by Sophocles.
If that sounds dry to you, wake up. These people (Steele and Lorca) have made this an incredibly fascinating production with music that will inspire you for days on end.
This is a tale for today....Antigone dying for ideology, and King Creon left to contemplate his hubris at condemining her.
Some of the questions at the core are...."Do the rights of the individual supersede the needs of the state?" And, "Does eternal law triumph over mortal law?"
Yes, those are questions of the day along with Why are the needs od survivors and respect for a corpse more important than civil order.
This is not only a production that will spur your mind, but lift your spirit with the music which provides a very important, and I have to say here, backdrop, but you won't think the music is a backdrop when you see this production in person.
It runs through November 6th at the Guthrie. see www.guthrietheater.org for more information on ticket availability.
Amazing!
