realtor bad spelling

I realize we've lost the importance of spelling and grammatical correctness (Thank you text messaging), but reading MLS descriptions of properties that are laden with spelling errors makes my teeth itch.  I mean really... I know many pronounce REALTOR incorrectly, but when a REALTOR spells it Realator what is that saying to the public? Some of the misspellings are obviously not typos but a testament to the fact the the agent likely mispronounces the word as well.

How about this description of a property...can you find the errors?  There are 12 of them.

Beutiful home surrounded by elegant rod iron fence, supposably from the 19th century. Excape to your backyard surrounded by tons of green foilage for a peaceful setting and the perfect heighth for privacy. 3 bedrooms and a libary that will accomodate all your books. There is also an excercise room off the back porch. This home is practicly garanteed to make you happy.  Call your Realator today!

So...what'dya say....grab a dictionary and make like da profeshunal youse 'sposed to be.

Amy, I agree with the premise of your post and would hope that writers/bloggers would use spell check more often.  However, we don't speak and write English as it was spoken in Shakespeare's time (we Americans don't even speak English like the English do today) and our language will continue to evolve into the future.  I can't even imagine what words a dictionary will contain 100 or more years into the future!

OMG.....my teeth are itching, too! :0(

I think you are right that our texting world has gotten us away from spelling words correctly....however, I know that many of us are "mature" enough (in years!) to be well past being able to use that excuse.

Some people are just not very good spellers....and that's ok.

However, those of us who do not excel at spelling & grammar (and also do not have spell check on MLS...HA!) simply need to take the time to be certain we get it right. We can have another set of eyes take a look at the finished product before we make it available to the masses.

You hit a nerve....kind of a pet peeve of mine.

We owe it to the people who are paying us to do a job, and just get it right!

Our MLS (and I think most others) have spell check. No excuse for a spelling mistake!

When the world seems the need to send secret codes in the form of text messages there will soon be trouble in everything else. That's my guess.

Holy smokes.  One mistake or two you can mark it up to maybe laziness or lack of spell check, but holy moly.  P.S. I still can't use text message words, I have to write the whole dang thing out every single time...-Kasey

Errors like that make me cringe, especially since I spent 4 years studying English in college. Unless the agent is using a Comodore 64 (I don't think spell check was invented back then) there is no excuse. As a potential buyer, I might like the photos of the home, but I definitely would be calling a different agent.

ShamWOW!  This is sooooo funny!  I mean, this *HAS* to be a joke, no?  I laughed. so. hard!  Thank you for that.  I often find myself cringing while scanning my Facebook newsfeed, as I do my best to practice good spelling and grammar.  I would have to say something to this agent.  This is just too much!  :D

Amy:

The Realtor was at least trying to paint a picture of what living in the house would be like.  Too bad they did not take the next step to spell and grammar check the info.

Amy,

Personal pet peeve. Usually, it's an assistant making the error but the agent is ultimately responsible. With that, how many commentors proof read their comments? Thanks for keeping us on our toes.

Do you think that, if I offered an editing service to Realtors, anybody would bite? I've seriously thought about doing this as an add-on to my staging services. As a former high school and college English composition instructor, I just cringe when I see mistakes like those you shared. What do you think? What would somebody be willing to pay for me to proof their listings before they go live?

Amy, that was almost as good as Gwen Banta's regular posts of goofs realtor make on the MLS.  I happen to know someone that uses supposably all the time, and it irks me to no end.

Thanks for the great rant.

This drives me crazy, too! When no attention is made to a MLS posting, which is a huge presentation for the home. Make sure you spell check and that your pictures are right side up and people aren't in them on "accident". Great call out.=)

Your example of terribly written English is so bad it is almost unbelievable. Seriously, I don't believe it. Other than that, even some folks leaving responses show their lack of writing skills. Post #1 is an example: I had my stupid "removed". Any writing course, even a basic one, teaches that quotation marks go outside periods and commas. Have you ever seen a newspaper or magazine article, or a book with quotation marks inside periods or commas? No!
