Real Estate and Social Media - Are you using it?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

Every day my SEO alert newsletters emphasize how important it is becoming to utilize Google Plus, the new service that Google is using to try so hard to compete with Facebook. I don't spend the time on it that I do on Facebook, but I do look at the stream there often, and seldom see any real estate agents...at least in my circles. I probably have about 100 Realtors in my circles, but no posts. If you aren't posting your blogs and important page links on Google Plus, I firmly believe you are missing out on an important message to Google that you are producing great content and need to be noticed.

The better IDX providers and blogs are now including a G+ button. It's here on Active Rain. Everyone here should get a Google account (Gmail), create a Google Profile with all your websites and profiles linked on it, and you should be submitting all your blog posts everytime.  Get your friends to do your pages too!  It would be a miracle to see everyone on Active Rain joining together to boost all the blog posts that way.

Here's what to look for on Active Rain blogs:

Social Media Buttons

That Google square will be white until you click on it. One click will turn it blue, which sends a vote of confidence to Google by itself.  It also opens a little box, and in very light lettering you will see "Share".  If you click in the comment box, it will post a link on your Google Plus stream just like Facebook does. It's best to add a comment using your real estate keyphrase too.

At this time, Facebook and Google are still sparring, and it's anybody's guess from one day to the next if Google will be able to see your links on Facebook.  Right now, it's only the links on the business pages that are open to search engine spidering. It doesn't hurt to do it, but it may or may not be a tremendous help either. Twitter is supposed to also be very important to Google rankings. If you have a Facebook account, you can set it to post to Twitter and Linked in automatically, which is the easiest way to kill several birds with one stone.

If you don't have a Facebook account, at the very least you do need to have a profile on LinkedIn and on Twitter. When you do a blog, get in the habit of publishing its link on all these services.  It really does help with the SEO of your website, that is...providing you are putting links on your blogs TO your website.  But we are all doing this, aren't we?  :-)

If you don't even have a website, or you're using your blog as your website, then be sure and fill out that Google profile anyway.  If you have it all filled out nicely, when someone searches your name, it will show that profile front and center.  No matter whether you really care about search engine rankings or not, you should...even the least effort will help a customer find you.  And the more effort you put into it, the more leads you will see.  I promise you that!

I need a how-to on optimizing social media. It there such a tool? I have all the media in place, FB,Google +, twitter etc. but I do not know how to utilize them. I tried hiring someone to help me but that didn't work out. I was on the cutting edge but now I am just cut.

Hi Elizabeth,

I don't know of any one place that gives you all the instructions on this kind of thing.  I can consult with you for a fee that is refundable if you ever decide to do a full SEO project with me.

The first thing you have to do is make sure your website pages are optimized.  It's not going to help to do all the extras if your text and navigation are not good for terms you are going after. Once that's done, then all of this will help a lot...but you've still got to have a few good solid links from other websites as well. These days it's not quantity, just quality.  Local businesses are the best.  Try to hook up with some home inspectors, lenders, or other businesses in your town to exchange links. Do all you can to get listed in www.DMOZ.org although it can be nearly impossible. Your blog will be a huge help.

One of the most helpful things of all is to do small videos on your communities and post them on YouTube.  Then either link or embed those videos on your website on the page for that community.  You are allowed to add a link in the video description to your website too. I've seen some super strong rankings from doing this.

There's so many things to consider and so much to do.  That's why you really need to hire someone to do it for you. Just making your Facebook and Twitter look pretty isn't the answer. Chances are, that's what you've paid for?

I'll be glad to talk to you about helping.

Hey Jan, I was afraid that Google would think I was spamming if I posted blog posts and pages to my Google + account. Good info and I will definitely start doing that on a regular basis!

As long as your blog posts aren't spammy, they won't see it as spam.  If you tend to write short, pointless articles just to add content, then I sure wouldn't be submitting that to them. :-)

Jan, Does this mean it is ok for us to click our own Google + button when we write a blog?

Absolutely. It's not just clicking the plus button.  Click it and watch it.  A box will drop down that says "Share" and that sends it to your profile stream on your plus account.  You don't want to just hit click and forget it.

The main thing is not to share your blog homepage instead of the post itself.  If so, then you just post the same link over and over and that might really hit some sort of spam filter.  Nobody really knows...but my theory is that when it comes to anything Google, you have to be very very careful not to overdo. At the same time, be proud of your articles, and post them everything you can.

Now they've come up with this new  rel="author" script that is eventually going to tie everything you do all over the web back to your Google profile. I'm working with that now.  It's complicated, but I think it will be a good thing.

People won't start using Google+ until they really feel it's a tremendous benefit to them...

And, as you wrote here: It most certainly is.

You didn't cover it in your article, but I just posted about using Google+ to get your face to show up in search results: http://activerain.com/blogsview/3331162/get-your-pretty-face-to-appear-in-google-search-results

I hope you enjoy it!

I read your blog this morning, RM Enterprises (You didn't put your name).  It was very good, and I should have commented.  I've been doing the rel=author thing for my clients for several weeks..or trying to show them how. Frankly, I don't want to see it get too widely known...haha.  It's giving my guys a great boost right now!  :-)

I've figured out how to put links to search forms and everything else on the Facebook pages now, too.  I just haven't had time to post about it.  Sometimes I don't think anybody ever reads what I spend so much time writing anyway, so I've gotten discouraged to even bother on here. Sometimes it feels like a little cliche that, if you aren't in it, you are spinning your wheels to try and help.
